History

A suffragan of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Honiara, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Gizo began in 1959 as a Vicariate Apostolic formed from the Vicariates Apostolic of Northern Solomon Islands and Southern Solomon Islands. Elevation to a diocese followed in 1966, when it took the name Diocese of Gizo. St. Peter's Cathedral at Gizo serves as the mother church.
