History

In the Solomon Islands, the Archdiocese of Honiara is a Latin Church archdiocese of the Catholic Church, heir to the apostolic prefecture of the British Solomon Islands erected in 1897. When Pope John Paul II created the ecclesiastical province of Honiara in 1978, it was the first such creation of his pontificate; the province contains two suffragan sees, Gizo (1966, formerly the Vicariate Apostolic of Western Solomon Islands) and Auki (1982).
