The cathedral

Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta stands in Siena, the church that holds the cathedra from which this see takes its name.

Its co-cathedral is Concattedrale dei Santi Marziale e Alberto (Colle di Val d'Elsa); Concattedrale di San Salvatore.

On what a cathedral is, see the cathedral; every see church on earth is gathered at the cathedrals.

History

In Tuscany, the Latin Church maintains the Archdiocese of Siena-Colle di Val d'Elsa-Montalcino (Latin: Archidioecesis Senensis-Collensis-Ilcinensis), whose archbishop is seated at the Cathedral of the Assumption in Siena. For centuries, until 1459, the diocese answered immediately to the Holy See (Papacy) and its bishops attended the Roman synods; in that year Pope Pius II raised Siena to a metropolitan archbishopric.
