History
One of Timor-Leste's three dioceses, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Baucau (Latin: Dioecesis Baucanus; Portuguese: Diocese de Baucau; Tetum: Dioseze Baukau) was established by Pope John Paul II in 1996. A Latin Church diocese, it cares for nearly 400,000 Catholics across the municipalities of Baucau, Lautém, Manatuto, and Viqueque, a territory of 6,987 km2 (2,698 square miles). Leandro Maria Alves has been its bishop since 2023.
