The Archdiocese of Tunis is the Latin Catholic archdiocese covering Tunisia, seated at the Cathedral of St. Vincent de Paul in Tunis. It was erected in 1884 as the Archdiocese of Carthage and took its present form in 2010, and is led by Archbishop Nicolas Lhernould, appointed in 2024.

History

Founded on 10 November 1884 as the Archdiocese of Carthage, with a territory matching that of the then French protectorate of Tunisia, the see now known as the Archdiocese of Tunis is a Latin Church territory of the Catholic Church in Tunis, Tunisia. On 9 July 1964 it became a territorial prelature under the title Prelature of Tunis; on 31 May 1995 it was made a diocese, keeping the name of Tunis; and on 22 May 2010 it was raised to the rank of archdiocese. Its cathedral is the Cathedral of St. Vincent de Paul.

  • Archdiocese of Tunis visits Diocese of Mazara del Vallo

    A delegation from the Archdiocese of Tunis visited the Diocese of Mazara del Vallo in Sicily from August 27 to August 31. The group, which included Bishop Nicolas, Father Jacques, Sister Laura, Sister Jessy, and a representative from the Archdiocese, traveled to visit their sister diocese. The visit follows a long tradition of Sicilian faithful traveling to Tunisia once or twice a year. This twinning relationship between the two dioceses will soon celebrate 30 years. During the trip, the delegation met with the Mazara twinning committee and various ecclesial groups within the diocese. The Archdiocese of Tunis stated that the partnership serves to encourage mutual growth in faith and ecclesial life while helping both communities face shared challenges through dialogue and cooperation.

    Archbishop Nicolas of Tunis released a pastoral letter titled "Like a Tree by the Waters" to guide the direction of the archdiocese following a diocesan gathering in Sousse.   • Pope Leo XIV names Mario León Dorado coadjutor archbishop of Rabat

    Pope Leo XIV appointed Mario León Dorado as coadjutor archbishop of the Archdiocese of Rabat on September 12. Dorado, a member of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, previously served as the apostolic administrator of the archdiocese. Born in Madrid on March 16, 1974, Dorado studied computer science before earning a theology degree from the San Dámaso Faculty of Theology in Madrid. He entered the Oblates of Mary Immaculate in 1996 and was ordained a priest on June 2, 2001. After serving as a parochial vicar in Jaén, Spain, from 2000 to 2004, he began missionary work in the Apostolic Prefecture of Laayoune-Sahara. He served as apostolic administrator there from 2009 to 2013 and became prefect in 2013.
