The Latin rite Archdiocese of Hanoi traces to the Apostolic Vicariate of Western Tonkin erected on 9 September 1659 and was elevated to a metropolitan archdiocese on 24 November 1960. It covers the Vietnamese capital and heads the ecclesiastical province of Hanoi with ten suffragan dioceses across northern Vietnam. Its cathedral is Saint Joseph Cathedral in Hanoi.

History

Among the earliest sees in the history of the Catholic Church in Vietnam is the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Hanoi (Latin: Archidioecesis Metropolitae Hanoiensis, Vietnamese: Tổng giáo phận đô thành Hà Nội, French: Archidiocèse Metropolitain d'Hanoï). Its creation in the present form was declared on 24 November 1960. Covering 7,000 km2, the archdiocese has been led by Archbishop Joseph Vũ Văn Thiên since November 2018.
