The Latin rite Diocese of Thai Binh in northern Vietnam was erected as an Apostolic Vicariate on 9 March 1936 and elevated to a diocese on 24 November 1960. A suffragan of the Archdiocese of Hanoi, its cathedral is the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Thai Binh.

History

In northern Vietnam lies the Roman Catholic diocese of Thai Binh (Latin: Dioecesis de Thai Binh), a suffragan see of the Archdiocese of Hanoi spanning 2,200 km2. Its present form dates to November 24, 1960, when the diocese was formally created. Dominic Đặng Văn Cầu has served as bishop since 2022, following Bishop Pierre Nguyễn Văn Đệ. Figures from 2004 record roughly 116,399 faithful, about 4.1% of the local population, served by 42 priests across 64 parishes.
