Pope Leo XIV says love cannot be practiced by mandate
During the Angelus on the 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Pope Leo XIV told the faithful gathered in St. Peter's Square that love for God is not an obligation or an imposition. Commenting on the Gospel passage where a scholar of the law asks Jesus about the greatest commandment, the Pope stated that one cannot love by mandate.
He explained that love for God must be a personal response to the love God provides first. This relationship requires the involvement of the heart, soul, and mind.
The Pope also noted that the commandment to love one's neighbor arises from the same source as the commandment to love God. He said an intimate relationship with God allows people to view themselves and others with the same gaze as Christ, which helps overcome selfishness and turns self-love into charity.
This was the second time the Pope presided over the Angelus since his surgery on October 13.
