Pope Leo XIV to send message to interreligious prayer meeting in Assisi

Catholic Intelligence1 min read

Pope Leo XIV will send a message of peace to an interreligious prayer meeting in Assisi on Tuesday instead of attending in person. The Holy See Press Office stated the pope will not travel to the meeting on the advice of doctors following his surgery earlier this month.

The meeting, held in the Lower Basilica, marks 40 years since Pope John Paul II invited religious leaders to the birthplace of Saint Francis of Assisi for a Day of Prayer for Peace. Patriarch Bartholomew I, the ecumenical patriarch of Constantinople, will join other religious leaders to pray for peace.

In his message, the pope is expected to address the need for peace that does not rely on military force or political maneuvering. The gathering follows the pope's previous visit to Assisi in August for the GO! Franciscan Youth Meeting.
