Pope Leo XIV appoints new members to the International Theological Commission

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Pope Leo XIV appointed 24 new members and renewed six existing members to the International Theological Commission on October 19, 2026.

The new appointments include four French-speaking members: Father Michel Fédou and Anne-Sophie Vivier-Muresan from Paris, Father Paul Béré from Burkina Faso, and Father Gaston Ogui Cossi from Benin. Sister Josée Ngalula, a Congolese theologian, was also renewed in her position. These 30 theologians will serve five-year terms ending in 2031.

The commission was established in Rome in 1969 by Pope Paul VI and operates within the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith to assist the Holy See in examining doctrinal questions. Father Michel Fédou, a Jesuit and professor emeritus at the Loyola Faculties in Paris, specializes in patristic theology, dogmatic theology, and ecumenism.
