The cathedral
Cattedrale di Sant'Andrea Apostolo stands in Amalfi, the church that holds the cathedra from which this see takes its name.
Its co-cathedral is Concattedrale di Santa Maria della Visitazione.
On what a cathedral is, see the cathedral; every see church on earth is gathered at the cathedrals.
History
With its episcopal see at Amalfi, not far from Naples, this Latin Church archdiocese (Latin: Archidioecesis Amalphitana-Cavensis) bore the name Archdiocese of Amalfi until September 30, 1986, when parts of the Diocese of Cava e Sarno were merged into it. Once exempt and directly dependent on the Holy See, it is now a suffragan of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Salerno-Campagna-Acerno. Orazio Soricelli is the current bishop. In 2015 the diocese of Amalfi had one priest for every 1,199 Catholics.
