History

A suffragan of the Archdiocese of Milan, the Diocese of Bergamo (Latin: Dioecesis Bergomensis; Italian: Diocesi di Bergamo; Lombard: Diocesi de Bergum) belongs to the Latin Church in Italy. Its position carried a cost: Bergamo stood where the mainland interests of the Republic of Venice met the territory of the Duchy of Milan, and since the French and the Holy Roman Empire regularly contested that duchy, the result was repeated military operations.

• Diocese of Bergamo to celebrate 100th World Mission Day

  The Diocese of Bergamo will observe the 100th World Mission Day and Missionary October with several scheduled events. The theme for the centenary, selected by Missio Italia, is "Uno in Cristo. Uniti nella missione". The month of mission begins on Thursday, October 1, with a widespread prayer service at 20.30 in the parishes of S. Francesco (Bergamo), Almé, Calusco, Gromo S. Marino, Lallio, Lurano, Sarnico, Scanzo, S. Pellegrino, and Valtrighe. On Tuesday, October 6, at 18.00, monasteries across the diocese will hold simultaneous Eucharistic celebrations. The celebrations include a vigil and missionary mandate at the Cattedrale di Bergamo on Friday, October 16, at 20.30. The 100th World Mission Day will take place on Saturday, October 17, and Sunday, October 18.

• Diocese of Bergamo to host theatrical performance “Francesco di terra e di vento“

  The Diocese of Bergamo will host the theatrical performance Francesco di terra e di vento to mark the 800 years since the death of the Saint of Assisi. The San Francesco parish, the Missione santa Rosa da Lima, and the Ufficio per la pastorale dei Migranti organized the event. The first performance takes place Thursday, September 24, 2026, at 20.45 at the parish church. A second performance is scheduled for Friday, October 2, 2026, at 21.00 at the church of S. Antonio da Padova in Bergamo. Manlio Casali, Manuel Gregna, and Giovanni Soldani perform the play, which is directed by Umberto Zanoletti with dramaturgical collaboration from Giulio Minuscoli. The production portrays Francesco as a man among men and sometimes before God, moving away from traditional iconography. Admission is free and open to all.

• Diocese of Bergamo hosts shared prayer moment

  The La Casa group in the Diocese of Bergamo will hold shared prayer sessions across 13 different locations throughout October 2026. The prayer meetings will take place at the following centers: the Comunità Missionaria del Paradiso in Bergamo, the Oratorio di Rovetta, the Cappuccini di Albino, the Oratorio di S. Pellegrino, Palazzo Passi in Villongo, the Chiesa di San Giuseppe in Berzo San Fermo, the Santuario del Lavello di Foppenico, the Frati Minori in Baccanello di Calusco, the Chiesetta dell’Immacolata in Almè, the Francescane di Montello, the Convento Padri Passionisti in Basella di Urgnano, the Santuario B.V. Maria Addolorata in Mariano di Dalmine, and the Casa don Guanella in Verdello. The diocese has made the October 2026 prayer materials available for download so participants can continue the prayers at home.
