Latin-rite diocese covering the cities of Butembo and Beni in North Kivu, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. It began as a mission sui iuris in 1934, became an apostolic vicariate in 1938, was promoted to a diocese in 1959, and took its current name in 1967; it is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Bukavu.

Catholic Bishop Urges Congolese to Speak Openly on Country’s Crisis During Inclusive National Dialogue
Bishop Melchisedec Sikuli Paluku is calling on citizens in the Democratic Republic of Congo to speak candidly about the nation's challenges during a planned inclusive national dialogue. Speaking to journalists after the National Justice and Peace Day celebration on September 23, the Bishop of the Diocese of Butembo-Beni said the dialogue, initiated by President Félix Tshisekedi, should allow people to address the causes of insecurity, killings, and obstacles to peace, development, and freedom. Bishop Paluku encouraged participants to set aside political affiliations, such as divisions between the majority and the opposition, during the discussions. He stated that the desire for peace, justice, and development should unite citizens regardless of their political, tribal, or territorial backgrounds. He emphasized that the people of the country need to speak among themselves about why they face occupation and violence.
