Diocese of Dallas

History

Founded in 1890, the Diocese of Dallas (Latin: Diœcesis Dallasensis) serves North Texas in the United States as a suffragan of the Archdiocese of San Antonio. Its mother church is the National Shrine Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Dallas, and Edward J. Burns is its bishop.

• Mental Health Sunday, Novena highlight Church’s focus on mental health ministry

  Catholics in the Diocese of Trenton and around the world are invited to pray throughout October to support mental health ministry. Pope Leo XIV designated the month for these prayers to help reduce the stigma and discrimination faced by people struggling with mental health issues. Parishes across the United States will observe National Mental Health Sunday on Oct. 11, following World Mental Health Day on Oct. 10. Bishop Edward J. Burns, who leads the Diocese of Dallas and chairs a committee for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, asked the faithful to remain mindful of their own mental health and the struggles of those in their families, workplaces, and Catholic communities. Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., noted in a previous message that many people carry burdens such as depression, anxiety, and addiction silently or behind busy lives.

• Parishioners come together to make rosaries for beatification

  More than 100 parishioners from St. Jude Catholic Parish in Allen gathered on Aug. 26 to handcraft 600 World Mission Rosaries. These rosaries are intended for people attending the beatification of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen in St. Louis, Missouri, on Sept. 24. Paula Mattei, a parishioner and member of the Diocese of Dallas Diocesan Mission Team, helped organize the event alongside Raymond Corral. The group participated in a nationwide campaign launched by The Pontifical Mission Societies on May 1, which seeks to collect 75,000 World Mission Rosaries for the beatification ceremony. The World Mission Rosary was created by Archbishop Sheen in 1951 while he served as the national director of The Pontifical Mission Societies. The design uses five different colors for each decade to represent various regions of the world where missionaries serve. Each rosary will be blessed before the beatification ceremony.

• Diocese prayerfully marks anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001, attacks

  The Diocese of Dallas held a Day of Remembrance at the National Shrine Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe to mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The cathedral bells tolled four times to signify the moments each hijacked flight crashed: 7:46 a.m. for American Airlines Flight 11, 8:03 a.m. for United Airlines Flight 175, 8:37 a.m. for American Airlines Flight 77, and 9:03 a.m. for United Airlines Flight 93. Bishop Edward J. Burns celebrated Mass at the cathedral and said the day is an opportunity to remember those who died, the families who lost loved ones, and the first responders.
