Latin-rite diocese seated in Riobamba, Chimborazo Province, Ecuador, suffragan of the Archdiocese of Quito. Erected on 29 December 1862 as the Diocese of Bolivar from territory of the Diocese of Cuenca and renamed Diocese of Riobamba on 25 August 1955. Its cathedral is the Catedral de San Pedro; Bishop Jose Bolivar Piedra has led the diocese since September 2022.

History

When it was erected on 29 December 1862 from territory of the Diocese of Cuenca, this Ecuadorian see was called the Diocese of Bolivar (Latin: Dioecesis Bolivarensis). It took its present name, the Diocese of Riobamba (Latin: Dioecesis Rivibambensis), on 25 August 1955, and is seated in Riobamba. On 28 April 2021, Pope Francis accepted the resignations of Bishop Julio Parrilla Díaz and of Coadjutor Bishop elect Gerardo Miguel Nieves Loja.
