History

All of the department of Gard belongs to the Diocese of Nîmes (Latin: Dioecesis Nemausensis; French: Diocèse de Nîmes), a Latin diocese of the Catholic Church in France. When the Concordat of 1801 reorganized the French church, Nîmes was not among the sees restored, and the lands of the former Diocese of Gard passed instead to the Diocese of Avignon.
