The Diocese of Le Puy-en-Velay is a Latin rite diocese covering the Haute-Loire department in south-central France, with origins in the 3rd century. It is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Clermont. Its seat is the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Le Puy-en-Velay, an ancient Marian pilgrimage shrine and starting point of the Via Podiensis to Santiago de Compostela.

History

The whole Department of Haute-Loire, in the Region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, falls within the Diocese of Le Puy-en-Velay (Latin: Dioecesis Aniciensis; French: Diocèse du Puy-en-Velay [djɔsɛz dy pɥi ɑ̃ vəlɛ]), a Latin diocese of the Catholic Church in France. Bourges was its first metropolitan, the see having begun as a suffragan subordinate to that archdiocese, but by the 11th century Le Puy answered directly to the papacy as its suffragan.

    Pope Leo XIV led Vespers with clergy and faithful at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris on September 25, 2026. Thousands of people followed the evening prayer service from the banks of the Seine. Before the service began, the pope stopped to pray before the reliquary of the Crown of Thorns. Rome Reports noted that the cathedral has undergone more than five years of restoration following a fire in 2019. During the event, the pope stated that the cathedral exists for prayer and the praise of God rather than just for admiration. He described liturgical gestures and song as sources of hope and peace in a noisy society.
