History

In Lazio, Italy, the Archdiocese of Gaeta (Latin: Archidioecesis Caietana) is a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory of the Catholic Church. The archbishop's cathedra stands in the Cathedral of SS. Erasmus and Marcianus and the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in the episcopal see of Gaeta. Though an archdiocese, it is not a metropolitan see: it is exempt, immediately subject to the Holy See. Luigi Vari, ordained a bishop on April 21, 2016 by Pope Francis, is the current archbishop of Gaeta.

  • Archbishop Luigi Vari announces pastoral changes in Diocese of Gaeta

    Archbishop Luigi Vari announced several leadership changes for parishes and a new missionary appointment during a priests' assembly in Itri on September 24. The changes include the following assignments: Don Gennaro Petruccelli will become the pastor of the Cuore Immacolato di Maria parish in Formia, following the departure of Don Mariano Salpinone for missionary work. Don Andrzej Zdanuk, who has led the Santa Margherita V.M. parish in Coreno Ausonia since 2008, will become the pastor of San Luca Evangelista in Maranola, Formia. Don Andrei Chiosa, previously a parochial vicar in Formia, will serve as the new pastor of Santa Margherita V.M. in Coreno Ausonio. Don Daniele Frecentese will move from his role in Fondi to become the parochial vicar for the Santi Lorenzo e Giovanni Battista parish in Formia. Additionally, Don Jerome Amirthayyan, who was named administrator for Santa Maria Assunta in Ponza this past July, continues his service there. The Archbishop also appointed Don Filippo Mitrano as the diocesan person in charge of missionary pastoral care.

  • Vicariato di Roma publishes edict for beatification cause of Luigi Di Liegro

    The Vicariate of Rome published an edict on September 22 for the beatification and canonization cause of Luigi Di Liegro, the first director of the diocesan Caritas in Rome. Cardinal Vicar Baldassarre Reina signed the document, which invites the faithful to report any information to the Vicariate's tribunal that may support or oppose the reputation for holiness of the priest. Di Liegro, who died in Milan on October 12, 1997, was a Roman priest born in Gaeta. The edict requires anyone possessing his writings, including manuscripts, diaries, letters, or private papers, to deliver them to the tribunal if they have not already been given to the Postulation. Those wishing to keep original documents may instead submit authenticated copies. The edict will remain posted for two months at the gates of the Vicariate of Rome and the Curia of Gaeta. It will also be published in diocesan media, on the Luigi Di Liegro Foundation website, and in L'Osservatore Romano.
