Diocese of Jaffna

History

In northern Sri Lanka, the Latin Church is organized as the Diocese of Jaffna (Latin: Dioecesis Jaffnensis). Latin Catholicism in this territory reaches back to the days of Francis Xavier. Justin Gnanapragasam serves as the current bishop.

  The Diocese of Jaffna held a funeral Mass for Father Antony Fernando Benet at St. Mary's Cathedral on Friday, September 25. Bishop Anran Ranjith presided over the service following a period of lying in state at the Bishop's House chapel. Thousands of people, including Mannar Bishop Anthony Pillai Gnanasigaram, priests, religious members, and relatives from the Jaffna and Mannar dioceses, attended the funeral. After the Mass, Father Benet was buried at the St. Konjesthi Mother Rehabilitation courtyard. His body had been brought from Canada for the services. Father Benet was ordained a priest in 1989. His ministry included serving as assistant priest in Mayilittivu, Ilvalai, and Paranthan, and as parish priest in Karavetti, Manippai, Kilinochchi, Paruthithurai, and Paranthan. He also served as the director of the German Tamil Catholic Spiritual Ministry, the diocesan director of the catechetical center, and the dean of the Kilinochchi and Paruthithurai deaneries. Additionally, he worked at the Vavuniya Chettikulam displaced persons camp.

  Japanese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Akiyo Isomoda visited the Jaffna and Mannar districts on September 23 and 24. During the visit to Jaffna, the ambassador met with the Northern Province Governor, representatives of families of the disappeared, and members of the Jaffna Chamber of Commerce. The itinerary also included visits to the Kankesanthurai Harbor, Jaffna International Airport, and the Jaffna Public Library. On September 24, the ambassador traveled to Mannar, where he visited the Pavu area, a former site for Sri Lanka–India passenger boat services, and the Madhu Shrine. While in Mannar, Isomoda met with Father Peppi Sosai, the administrator of the Madhu Shrine, and Father Arulraj Cruz, the director of the Vazhudhayana Institute.

  Artists from the Jaffna Catholic Cultural Center performed the play Pudhiya Oru Veedu at the University of Peradeniya. The production took place on Wednesday, September 23, at the Professor Ethirveerachandra Open Air Theatre. The performance was part of the 31st Student Literary Festival organized by the University of Peradeniya Students' Union. While the festival featured various Sinhala plays, Pudhiya Oru Veedu was the Tamil play presented.
