History

Covering the counties of Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and Ventura in the southern part of California, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles (Latin: Archidiœcesis Angelorum in California, Spanish: Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles) is a Catholic archdiocese in the United States. Its cathedral is the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles, and José Horacio Gómez Velasco serves as its present archbishop.

• Former Vatican official transferred to huge Mexican archdiocese (Vatican Press Office)

  Pope Leo XIV has transferred Archbishop Jorge Carlos Patrón Wong from the Archdiocese of Jalapa to the Archdiocese of Puebla de los Ángeles in Mexico. The 68-year-old archbishop previously served as the head of the Archdiocese of Jalapa, which had 1,466,000 Catholics according to 2024 figures from the Annuario Pontificio. He now moves to the Archdiocese of Puebla de los Ángeles, which has 3,127,000 Catholics. While this archdiocese is smaller than the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, it is larger than any other diocese in the United States. Patrón Wong previously served as the secretary for seminaries in the Dicastery of the Clergy, a position he was named to by Pope Francis in 2013. He was also the bishop of Papantla before being named archbishop of Jalapa in 2021.

  Foreign-born priests now make up approximately one-fourth of the clergy serving parishes in the United States, according to Msgr. Richard Antall. While historical immigration from Europe brought priests from France and Ireland to help immigrant communities, many current foreign-born priests come from Asia and Africa to address priest shortages in rural areas and serve majority Anglo parishioners. These clergy members include naturalized citizens, green-card holders, and those working under special visas. However, Msgr. Antall noted that a 2023 State Department policy change regarding EB-4 green card applications for religious workers created a backlog of up to 150,000 cases. He stated that this policy change forced his predecessor to leave the United States, leading the bishop to transfer him to the parish. Msgr. Antall also noted that language and cultural differences can affect pastoral care.

• Bishop Robert Barron preaches at vespers on eve of Archbishop Sheen's beatification

  Bishop Robert Barron of the Diocese of Winona-Rochester preached a homily during vespers on Sept. 23 at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis to prepare for the beatification of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen. Archbishop Mitchell T. Rozanski of St. Louis presided over the evening prayer, which was attended by between 1,000 and 1,500 people, including cardinals, bishops, priests, religious, and lay faithful. Organizers chose St. Louis as the site for the beatification to accommodate the large crowds, though the cause for Sheen's canonization was originally introduced by his home Diocese of Peoria. During his nearly 19-minute reflection, Bishop Barron described Sheen as a pivotal figure in modern Church history who used electronic media to evangelize the world. Barron identified Sheen's friendship with Jesus Christ as the root of his holiness and noted that the archbishop served as a model and inspiration for his own evangelization work.
