  • Former Vatican official transferred to huge Mexican archdiocese (Vatican Press Office)

Pope Leo XIV has transferred Archbishop Jorge Carlos Patrón Wong from the Archdiocese of Jalapa to the Archdiocese of Puebla de los Ángeles in Mexico. The 68-year-old archbishop previously served as the head of the Archdiocese of Jalapa, which had 1,466,000 Catholics according to 2024 figures from the Annuario Pontificio. He now moves to the Archdiocese of Puebla de los Ángeles, which has 3,127,000 Catholics. While this archdiocese is smaller than the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, it is larger than any other diocese in the United States. Patrón Wong previously served as the secretary for seminaries in the Dicastery of the Clergy, a position he was named to by Pope Francis in 2013. He was also the bishop of Papantla before being named archbishop of Jalapa in 2021.

  • Pope Leo XIV celebrates Mass in Metz

Pope Leo XIV celebrated Mass at the Cathedral of St. Stephen in Metz on Sept. 28, marking the conclusion of a four-day pastoral visit to France. During his homily, the pope urged Europeans to pursue reconciliation and peace rather than revenge or retaliation. He told the congregation that seeking forgiveness and walking together are not signs of weakness, noting that the region has a history of being divided by conflict. Thousands of people gathered in the streets of Metz to watch the pope pass in his popemobile. The mayor of Metz, Francois Grosdidier, met the pope and presented him with several gifts, including a wooden tennis racket. French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, attended the Mass.

  • French abuse survivors deeply moved as Pope Leo acknowledges Church's failures

Pope Leo XIV met with seven survivors of clergy sexual abuse in Lourdes on September 27 to acknowledge the institutional failures that allowed the crisis to persist. During the meeting, which included both individual and group sessions, the pope expressed closeness to the victims and their ongoing suffering, according to the Vatican. Five survivors, Véronique Garnier, Olivier Mardi, Jérôme Guillement, Bertrand Virieux, and Jean-Marie Delbos, spoke at a press conference following the audience. Delbos, 80, who was abused as a child at the Notre-Dame de Bétharram boarding school, said the pope embraced him during their encounter. Guillement, who leads a survivors' panel for French Catholic schools, stated that the pope has a clear view of the systemic issues involved. He urged the pope to prioritize a culture change to prevent future abuse rather than relying on training modules or procedures. Two other participants in the meeting chose to remain anonymous.

  • What our reliance on foreign-born priests says about US Catholics

Foreign-born priests now make up approximately one-fourth of the clergy serving parishes in the United States, according to Msgr. Richard Antall. While historical immigration from Europe brought priests from France and Ireland to help immigrant communities, many current foreign-born priests come from Asia and Africa to address priest shortages in rural areas and serve majority Anglo parishioners. These clergy members include naturalized citizens, green-card holders, and those working under special visas. However, Msgr. Antall noted that a 2023 State Department policy change regarding EB-4 green card applications for religious workers created a backlog of up to 150,000 cases. He stated that this policy change forced his predecessor to leave the United States, leading the bishop to transfer him to the parish. Msgr. Antall also noted that language and cultural differences can affect pastoral care.

  • A German thinker’s wisdom on marriage for the Church ten years after ‘Amoris Laetitia’

Pope Leo XIV will meet with the presidents of bishops' conferences, heads of Eastern Catholic Churches, and various families in Rome this October. The gathering aims to discuss how to proclaim the Gospel to families facing rapid modern changes. The meeting coincides with the tenth anniversary of Pope Francis' apostolic exhortation, Amoris Laetitia. Pope Leo XIV has expanded the agenda to include the global decline in marriage and childbearing among young adults. The discussions follow unresolved questions regarding how priests should accompany divorced and civilly remarried couples. Specifically, the Church continues to address whether such individuals may receive the Eucharist while maintaining the teaching on the indissolubility of marriage. The meeting will also address how pastors should handle case-by-case discernment following previous remarks regarding the primacy of conscience and the possibility that some marriages are null due to ignorance.
