History

Central Myanmar is the home of the Archdiocese of Mandalay, a Latin Catholic ecclesiastical jurisdiction covering about 212,407 square kilometres (82,011 sq mi): the southern part of Sagaing Region, almost the whole Mandalay Region and the eastern part of Magwe Region. Its suffragan dioceses are Myitkyina, Banmaw, Lashio and Hakha. Most of the Burmese people are Buddhist, with a few Muslims and Hindus, and the ethnic groups in the city include Myanmar, Kayin, Karen, Tamil and Chinese. Burmese is the language used across the diocesan territory.
