The cathedral
Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta stands in Modena–Nonantola, the church that holds the cathedra from which this see takes its name.
Its co-cathedral is Basilica Abbaziale di San Silvestro I Papa.
On what a cathedral is, see the cathedral; every see church on earth is gathered at the cathedrals.
History
A Latin archdiocese of the Catholic Church in Italy, the Archdiocese of Modena-Nonantola (Latin: Archidioecesis Mutinensis-Nonantulana) traces its roots to the Diocese of Modena in central Italy, which existed from the 4th century. At first it was a suffragan of the diocese of Milan, and later of Ravenna. During the schism of the Antipope Clement III, Pope Paschal II released Modena from obedience to the church of Ravenna, though Pope Gelasius II restored the earlier arrangement.
