The Diocese of Modena dates to the 4th century and was elevated to an archdiocese on 22 August 1855, with suffragans including Carpi, Fidenza, Parma, Piacenza-Bobbio, and Reggio Emilia-Guastalla.

History
A Latin archdiocese of the Catholic Church in Italy, the Archdiocese of Modena-Nonantola (Latin: Archidioecesis Mutinensis-Nonantulana) traces its roots to the Diocese of Modena in central Italy, which existed from the 4th century. At first it was a suffragan of the diocese of Milan, and later of Ravenna. During the schism of the Antipope Clement III, Pope Paschal II released Modena from obedience to the church of Ravenna, though Pope Gelasius II restored the earlier arrangement.
