History

Carved from the territory of the Archdiocese of Cuzco on April 28, 1958, the Diocese of Abancay is a Latin Church jurisdiction of the Catholic Church in Peru; Alcides Mendoza Castro became its first bishop at its erection. It remains a suffragan within the ecclesiastical province of the metropolitan Archdiocese of Cuzco, and Gilberto Gómez González has led the diocese since 2009.
