Latin rite metropolitan archdiocese in Peru's south-central Andes, erected 20 July 1609 as the Diocese of Huamanga from the Diocese of Cusco, renamed Ayacucho in 1838 and elevated to metropolitan rank on 30 June 1966. Its seat is the Cathedral Basilica of St. Mary in Ayacucho, and its province includes the Diocese of Huancavelica and the Prelature of Caraveli.

History
Erected in the early 17th century and raised to metropolitan rank in 1966, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Ayacucho o Huamanga (Latin: Ayacuquensis o Huamangensis) covers the city of Ayacucho in the south-central Andes of Peru. Archbishop Salvador Piñeiro García-Calderón, at its head since 2011, also serves as ecclesiastical provincial for the Diocese of Huancavelica and the Territorial Prelature of Caravelí.
