History
The Romanian Catholic Eparchy of Maramureș, founded in 1927, belongs to the Romanian Greek Catholic Church, an Eastern Catholic particular church in full communion with the Holy See; an eparchy is the counterpart of a Latin Church diocese. Its liturgical life follows the Byzantine Rite in the Romanian language. The see is a suffragan of the Major Archeparchy of Făgăraș and Alba Iulia, and its cathedral, the Cathedral of the Assumption, stands in the city of Baia Mare, Romania. Vasile Bizău serves as the current eparch.
