Latin-rite diocese in northwestern Romania, established on 23 March 1804 under Emperor Francis I and constituted in its present form in 1982; it has been a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Bucharest since 1930. Its seat is the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Satu Mare and it serves a largely Hungarian-speaking faithful.

History
The Latin diocese of Satu Mare (Latin: Dioecesis Satmariensis; Hungarian: Szatmári Római Katolikus Püspökség) in Romania traces its establishment to 23 March 1804, when Francis I, King of Hungary, erected it, an act Pope Pius VII recognised that 9 August. The diocese then lay within the Kingdom of Hungary and embraced a larger territory that included land in present-day Hungary and Slovakia as well as Romania. Until 1930 it was a suffragan see of the Archdiocese of Eger.
