Bishop Barron meets Pope Leo XIV at Vatican, ordains 18 deacons

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Bishop Robert E. Barron met Pope Leo XIV for a private audience at the Vatican on Oct. 1 and ordained 18 American seminarians as deacons in St. Peter’s Basilica. The seminarians are from the Pontifical North American College.

During the meeting in the Apostolic Palace, Bishop Barron, who has led the Diocese of Winona-Rochester since 2022, described the conversation as a comfortable discussion covering many topics. Barron noted that the Chicago-born pope opened the meeting by referencing their shared connection to Chicago.

In an interview at the U.S. Embassy in Italy on Sept. 30, Barron spoke about the influence of the papacy on the United States. He suggested that the pope's presence and charisma have a positive impact on Americans, particularly young people, and noted a sense of religious revival in the country.
