Catholic school devotional project focusing on St. Francis of Assisi

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

The Diocese of Venice Department of Catholic Education has selected St. Francis of Assisi as the subject for its 2026-2027 diocesan-wide devotional project. The project coincides with the Jubilee Year of St. Francis, proclaimed by Pope Leo XIV to mark the 800th anniversary of the saint's death.

The initiative involves more than 6,500 students in diocesan Catholic schools. To prepare for the project, Father John Belmonte, SJ, the diocesan superintendent of Catholic education, and Dr. Jennifer Falestiny, the director of curriculum and instruction, held a training session for junior catechists on Oct. 16, 2026, at the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center in Venice.

Eighth grade leaders from the diocese's 12 elementary schools participated in the training. These students will enter classrooms in the coming months to teach younger students about the life of St. Francis. Bishop Emilio E. Biosca, O.F.M. Cap., supports the focus on this saint. The diocese has conducted these annual devotional projects since the 2020-2021 academic year.
