Cardinal Steiner highlights the importance of voting and political participation in elections
Cardinal Steiner urged voters to participate in upcoming elections and pay close attention to candidate proposals for both executive and legislative offices. Speaking through the Diocese of Roraima, the Cardinal of Amazon emphasized the need to combat misinformation and false news as the voting period approaches. Steiner described political charity as a way to promote the common good, fraternity, justice, and service to marginalized people. He noted that buying votes can further marginalize vulnerable populations. He also cautioned that voters often overlook the importance of the legislative branch, which creates and approves laws. The Cardinal cited specific examples of legislative influence, including PL 2.159/2021, which changed environmental licensing rules, and PEC 3/2021, which sought to expand immunity for deputies and senators against criminal investigations.
