Covering the southwestern part of Connecticut in the United States, the Diocese of Bridgeport (Latin: Dioecesis Bridgeportensis) takes in all of Fairfield County, Connecticut. It is suffragan to the metropolitan Archdiocese of Hartford, its cathedral is St. Augustine Cathedral in Bridgeport, and its bishop is Frank Caggiano.

  • Diocese of Bridgeport holds novena to Padre Pio

    The Diocese of Bridgeport held a novena to St. Pio of Pietrelcina, drawing hundreds of people to St. Augustine Cathedral. During the fourth day of the novena, faithful gathered to venerate five relics of the saint, which included a piece of his mantle, a lock of his hair, a handkerchief he used during Mass, a crust from his wounds, and his brown fingerless glove. Attendees shared personal accounts of devotion and intercession. Esther Rivera, a parishioner of St. Charles Borromeo Parish in Bridgeport, described seeing visions of the saint while praying in her parish's adoration chapel. Lynn French, a parishioner of Blessed Michael McGivney Parish in New Haven, attended with her husband and described the saint as an inspiration to their marriage.

  • Pope Leo XIV to beatify Fulton Sheen

    Pope Leo XIV announced during a general audience on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, that Bishop Fulton J. Sheen will be beatified. The ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, September 24, in St. Louis. During the audience in the Vatican, the Pope stated that Sheen's life should serve as a model for new generations. Sheen was known for his work using media to evangelize. Cardinal Luis Antonio G. Tagle shared the Pope's sentiments regarding the elevation of Sheen to Blessed.

  • Diocese of Bridgeport pilgrims visit National Shrine of The Divine Mercy

    About 40 parishioners from the Diocese of Bridgeport traveled to the National Shrine of The Divine Mercy in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, on the Feast Day of Saint James. The Lay Missionaries of Charity organized the pilgrimage, which used a coach bus to transport the group from St. Rose of Lima Church. Parochial Vicar Father Cajetan Oleaghara accompanied the participants, many of whom walked the outdoor Stations of the Cross. Father Oleaghara noted that the pilgrimage is a journey of faith and a way to uplift spirits. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops designated the site as a national shrine in 1996.

  • St. Joseph Parish to give ‘regards to Broadway’ Sunday, October 4, 2026

    St. Joseph Parish will host its annual fall concert, A Broadway Melody, at 3 p.m. on Sunday, October 4, 2026. The event on Fairmont Place will feature the parish children’s and adult choirs, several vocal and instrumental soloists, and a mini pit orchestra. Artistic director Daniel J. Horstmann selected the Broadway theme to connect with the nation's 250th anniversary. Horstmann said the musical selections will span various eras of theater, ranging from the 1904 production Little Johnny Jones to the 2015 musical Hamilton. The Diocese of Bridgeport noted that a previous publication incorrectly listed the concert date as Saturday, October 4.

  • Decree Promulgating Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Services

    Bishop Frank J. Caggiano issued a decree for the Diocese of Bridgeport requiring all individuals and entities working in diocesan health care services to follow the seventh edition of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services. The order, which took effect September 23, 2026, applies to any physical, moral, or canonical person involved in health care apostolates within the diocese. Bishop Caggiano stated the decree aims to protect the integrity of faith, moral principles, and Church discipline. The bishop also ordered that chaplains assigned to health care ministry receive copies of both the directives and the decree. The provisions are to be published in the diocesan newspaper, The Fairfield County Catholic, and on the official diocesan website.
