Latin rite metropolitan archdiocese on Spain's Mediterranean coast, restored as a diocese in 1238 after the Reconquista and elevated to archdiocese in 1492 by Pope Innocent VIII. Its suffragans are Ibiza, Majorca, Menorca, Orihuela-Alicante and Segorbe-Castellon. Its seat is the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady in Valencia, home of the Holy Chalice.

History

At the head of the ecclesiastical province of Valencia stands the Archdiocese of Valencia (Latin: Archidioecesis Valentinus), a Latin Church diocese in north-eastern Spain, in the province of Valencia within the autonomous community of Valencia. Its metropolitan authority extends over the suffragan dioceses of Ibiza, Majorca, Minorca, Orihuela-Alicante and Segorbe-Castellón. The archbishops have their seat in Valencia Cathedral; in 2022 Enrique Benavent Vidal succeeded Cardinal Antonio Cañizares Llovera as Archbishop of Valencia.

  • Bishop Arturo García to preside over thanksgiving mass in Valencia

    Bishop Arturo García, auxiliary bishop of Valencia, presided over a thanksgiving mass for the deceased at the Nuestra Señora de Gracia parish in the La Torre neighborhood. The mass followed the reopening and dedication of the temple, which was held on Saturday by Archbishop Enrique Benavent. The parish reopened after two years of reconstruction following damage caused by the DANA weather event. During the floods, the parish served as a central distribution point for aid in the area. Pastor Salvador Pastor Abril wrote to neighbors stating that the parish community is reopening while remembering the families in the neighborhood who were victims of the floods, particularly those who lost loved ones. Pastor Abril noted that the disaster resulted in a stronger sense of community and belonging among residents.

    Archbishop Enrique Benavent presided over a Thanksgiving Mass at the Valencia Cathedral on Sunday to mark the 25th anniversary of the beatification of the Valencian martyrs. The liturgy served as the second central event organized by the Archdiocese of Valencia's Vicariate of Evangelization to commemorate the anniversary, following a colloquium with experts held the previous week. In 2001, Pope John Paul II beatified Valencian priest José Aparicio Sanz and 232 companions who were martyred in Spain between 1936 and 1939. This group included diocesan priests, religious men and women, married and single laypeople, and members of various ecclesial movements.
