  • Kauai community comes through after Hurricane Lowell

    Kauai residents provided food, water, and cleanup assistance to one another following the passage of Hurricane Lowell on September 7 and 8. Father EJ Resinto, pastor of St. Catherine of Alexandria Church in Kapaa, noted that the community worked together to ensure everyone was cared for after the storm. The Category 2 hurricane passed west of Kauai and Niihau, bringing heavy winds and significant rainfall. According to the University of Hawaii, Mount Waialeale received more than 23 inches of rain within a 24-hour period. While weather stations at lower elevations recorded average winds of 56 miles per hour, experts estimate wind speeds reached approximately 100 miles per hour on higher ridges. Father Resinto, who lived through Hurricane Iniki in 1992, stated that the impact of Lowell did not compare to that previous storm.

  • Kalaupapa water crisis is a challenge, but is ‘in God’s plan’

    A series of failures in a decades-old pump system forced the evacuation of the Kalaupapa peninsula on Molokai earlier this month. The water system, which was originally inaugurated by Father Damien de Veuster in 1873 and last updated in 1985, created unsafe conditions that required the removal of all residents and workers from the settlement. The evacuation affects several groups living in the remote area, including state Department of Health employees, National Park Service staff, and patient-residents. The community also includes two Franciscan sisters and a Sacred Hearts priest who continue the caregiving legacy of Father Damien and Mother Marianne Cope. Because of the peninsula's isolation, residents often face long waits for supplies and repairs to arrive by boat, small airplane, or foot.

  • Bishop Michael T.T. Castori, SJ: Notes from Rome

    Bishop Michael T.T. Castori, SJ, recently completed a weeklong Vatican formation course for recently ordained bishops in Rome. The program included presentations from leaders of various Vatican departments, such as those for education, evangelization, and divine worship. Castori said these speakers emphasized the importance of listening, which reflects the synodal model of the Church promoted by Pope Francis and Pope Leo. He noted that this model acknowledges that every member of the Church has a voice worthy of being heard. During the week, Castori met with other recently named U.S. bishops and bishops from around the world. The course also included small group discussions about their dioceses and a pilgrimage to the tomb of St. Francis in Assisi.

  • Pope Leo XIV publishes encyclical Magnifica humanitas

    Pope Leo XIV published his first encyclical, Magnifica humanitas, to provide a vision and method for protecting human dignity during the age of artificial intelligence. During a meeting on September 10 with approximately 147 bishops from five continents at the Vatican Synod Hall, the pope described the document as a way to address the challenges posed by advances in communication technologies and artificial intelligence. He noted that while these technologies create new possibilities, they cannot remove humanity from sin or the crises the world currently faces.
