Diocese of Timişoara

History

Pope Pius XI established the Diocese of Timișoara (Latin: Dioecesis Timisoarensis; Hungarian: Temesvári Római Katolikus Püspökség), a Latin diocese in Romania, on 5 June 1930. Roughly the same region had been served by the Diocese of Cenad (Csanád), created in 1030 by Stephen I of Hungary; when that see was divided in 1930, the Hungarian portion (now the Diocese of Szeged-Csanád) kept the old name, even though Cenad itself lies within the Diocese of Timișoara.

  Pope Leo XIV held a public moment of prayer at the Massabielle grotto in Lourdes on Saturday, September 26. The visit marked the start of the second stage of his apostolic journey in France, following his time in Paris. After arriving in Lourdes, the pope met with civil and religious authorities and inaugurated a bridge named in his honor. He arrived at the grotto to pray, where he followed pilgrimage customs such as lighting a candle and using the water. In a prayer released by the Archdiocese of Avignon, the pope asked for the protection of France and for its people to experience fraternal harmony and peace. He prayed for the country to reject violence and war, for the defense of human rights, and for the support of the poor. He also asked for wise and generous leaders who serve the common good and for the renewal of faith within Christian families.

• Camino din România – porți deschise spre Europa takes place in Timișoara

  Camino din România – porți deschise spre Europa took place in Timișoara on September 18 and 19, 2026, to promote the spiritual, cultural, and European significance of the Romanian Camino pilgrimage route. The event brought together pilgrims, representatives from project associations, and supporters of pilgrimage route development in Romania. Elisabeta Turi, the western regional representative for the Asociația Prietenilor Camino de Santiago in Timișoara, organized the September 18 program. Father Gabriel Ciubotariu, the spiritual guide for the Camino de România, gave a lecture titled "The Spirituality of the Camino." He described the pilgrimage as an external route that can become an internal path toward Christ, where each step serves as an opportunity for prayer, reflection, and gratitude. The program included live music by guitarist Lia Burg.
