Pope Leo XIV completed a four-day apostolic journey to France, visiting Paris, Lourdes, and Metz to advocate for the dignity of human life. During his trip, which began on September 25, the pope addressed social and ethical issues, including challenging lawmakers regarding the approval of assisted dying and condemning abortion and surrogacy.
In Paris, the pope attended a youth vigil and celebrated Mass at Notre-Dame with 700,000 faithful. He also met with students at the Catholic University of Paris. During his pilgrimage to Lourdes, he met with the sick and disabled, emphasizing that suffering does not diminish a person's worth.
The visit concluded in Metz, where the pope preached at the city's 12th-century cathedral. He spoke about the importance of choosing forgiveness and mercy over violence and suggested that a peace plan for Europe remains possible. Throughout the journey, the pope called on the French Church to nurture new seeds of faith amid an influx of people preparing for the sacraments of initiation.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced the creation of an Office of Religious Affairs during a speech at U.S. Marine Corps Base Quantico on Sept. 30. The new office will report directly to the secretary to provide military chaplains with an advocate at the highest levels of the Department of Defense.
Hegseth stated the office aims to ensure policy and resources serve the military mission rather than hindering it. According to a Department of Defense statement, the office elevates spiritual readiness as a core element of combat effectiveness. The department noted the office will not compel religious participation, favor one specific faith, or diminish the rights of personnel of any faith or no faith.
Archbishop Broglio of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, said the archdiocese hopes the office strengthens support for service members, their families, and the chaplain corps. He noted that placing spiritual readiness alongside other departmental priorities could help resolve historical constraints that limited chaplaincy support.
During the same speech, Hegseth announced the establishment of an Autonomous Warfare Command to develop autonomous military capabilities. This development follows warnings from Pope Leo XIV and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops regarding the grave implications of such technology, as noted in the papal encyclical *Magnifica Humanitas*.

Pope Leo XIV met with an 18-person delegation from the Lutheran World Federation on October 1, 2026, to encourage deeper dialogue and full unity between Catholics and Lutherans. During the meeting, the Pope described the Augsburg Confession as a document of reconciliation within the Church and urged believers to return to their common roots to ensure Christ does not become a foreign concept.
The Pope identified the year 2030, which marks the 500th anniversary of the Augsburg Confession, as an opportunity to provide new momentum for ecumenical dialogue. He expressed hope that this anniversary will allow both traditions to rediscover an apostolic and pre-confessional heritage that unites them in Jesus.
The delegation included Tamás Fabiny, an Evangelical bishop and vice president of the federation, who participated in a private audience with the Pope. Following the meeting, the Lutheran representatives held discussions with Cardinal Kurt Koch, prefect of the Dicastery for Christian Unity, and Archbishop Flavio Pace.

He stated that this formation helps them address modern human problems and bear witness to Christian hope. He also highlighted the institution's contributions to Christian archaeology, Church history, and the study of Christian origins.

Pope Leo XIV proclaimed a Jubilee Year to mark the 800th anniversary of the death of St. Francis. The yearlong celebration began on Jan. 10 and continues until Jan. 10, 2027. According to the papal decree, this jubilee serves as the culmination of previous 800th anniversaries of milestones in the life of St. Francis, such as his composition of the Canticle of the Creatures and the receiving of the stigmata.
The Diocese of Assisi-Nocera Umbra-Gualdo Tadino scheduled celebrations for Oct. 3 and 4 to commemorate the saint's feast day. The events begin Oct. 3 with a procession and the Transitus, a traditional Franciscan prayer service marking the saint's transition into eternal life. This service will take place at the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels in the chapel where St. Francis died.
A walking pilgrimage through Assisi will conclude at the Basilica of St. Francis, where bells are scheduled to ring at 11:59 p.m. to herald the feast day. Giulio Cesareo, spokesman for the Basilica of St. Francis, invited parish priests and rectors of churches and shrines worldwide to ring their bells at the same time to honor the saint.

Bishop David M. O’Connell, chairman of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Catholic Education, called the proposed Federal Scholarship Tax Credit a transformative opportunity for children following the release of implementation regulations by the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the IRS.
The proposed regulations for the program, also known as the Education Freedom Tax Credit, provide a nonrefundable federal tax credit for contributions made to scholarship granting organizations. The credit is intended to benefit students in public, charter, and private schools, including religious institutions. For the program to provide scholarships to children in a specific state, that state must formally elect to opt-in. Federal agencies stated that approximately 96% of children in participating states would be eligible for funds.
The program, which was enacted in 2025, is scheduled to launch on January 1. Steven F. Cheeseman, president and CEO of the National Catholic Educational Association, noted that the regulations clarify that married couples filing jointly can claim up to $3,400 in tax credits for eligible contributions, doubling the previously understood $1,700 household limit. Individuals can claim up to $1,700 for qualifying contributions.

The Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith will publish a new document titled Venite ad Me in mid-October to address the challenges of passing on the faith to future generations. The text, which translates to "Come to Me," responds to a request from Pope Francis that was later embraced by Pope Leo XIV.
A source from the dicastery told ACI Prensa that the document explores various ways to encourage dioceses to reflect on the difficulties and new opportunities for sharing faith in Jesus Christ. The text addresses how to successfully transmit the faith in a world where doing so is becoming increasingly difficult in many regions.
To ensure the document reflects a wide range of global contexts, the Vatican consulted bishops' conferences worldwide, receiving responses from 70 percent of them. This work follows an earlier announcement in May by Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández that the dicastery was preparing a broad document on the subject in dialogue with the Dicastery for Evangelization.

Archbishop Eamon Martin and Archbishop John McDowell have called for the urgent creation of a reconciling initiative to address rising tensions in Northern Ireland. In an ecumenical statement released September 27, the Catholic Primate of All Ireland and the Anglican Archbishop of the Church of Ireland urged all parties to use peaceful and democratic processes to find solutions.
The call for dialogue follows a standoff in Portadown, County Armagh, involving a march by the Protestant Orange Order. On September 27, thousands of protesters gathered to oppose the march as it was scheduled to pass through the Garvaghy Road, a main thoroughfare used by the Catholic community. While protesters dispersed that Sunday night, members of the Orange Order continued attempting the march until the early hours of Monday, September 28.
The archbishops warned that too much is at stake, stating they could not think of any time in the last 30 years when the commandment to love God and neighbor needs to be more urgently heard. They expressed a willingness to guide others on the way of peace to build a better future for all.

A digital copy of a 1977 homily by Blessed Fulton J. Sheen was recently shared with Father Matthew Gonzalez, the rector of the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark. The recording was provided by a man who had made a special audio recording of the Mass nearly 50 years ago.
Sheen, who was living in retirement in New York City at the time, traveled to Newark at the invitation of Archbishop Peter L. Gerety to celebrate Mass on March 6, 1977, during the second Sunday of Lent. During the liturgy, Sheen sat in the cathedra and delivered the sermon. Father Gonzalez told Jersey Catholic that he was unaware Sheen had visited the cathedral before receiving the recording.
The discovery of the audio led Father Gonzalez to the archdiocesan archives, where he found photos and documentation of the event. He also located the chasuble Sheen wore during the Mass, which is considered a second-class relic. The vestment was displayed at the cathedral from September 19 to October 4 to mark Sheen's beatification.

Pope Leo XIV has released his message for the 100th World Mission Day, which will be celebrated on Sunday, October 18, 2026. The Pope chose the theme "One in Christ, united in mission" to mark the centenary of the day, which was originally established by Pope Pius XI in 1926.
In his message, the Pope encourages the Church to continue its missionary journey with joy and zeal following the Jubilee Year. He states that effective evangelization requires reconciled communities, hearts united in Christ, and a willingness among all people to cooperate with generosity and trust. The Pope emphasizes that the Church's primary missionary responsibility is to maintain spiritual and fraternal unity among its members.
The message clarifies that mission is not limited to those who travel to other lands, but is a task for every baptized person according to their specific vocation and gifts. He describes the Church's identity as a communion flowing from the Trinity, which serves to promote fraternity among humans and harmony with all creation.

Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem
Father Bernard Poggi, rector of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem’s seminary in Beit Jala, warned that the Christian presence in the Holy Land is under threat due to increasing pressures. Speaking during a Day of Prayer for Christians in the Middle East in Augsburg on September 13, Poggi stated that the living space for these communities is shrinking.
Poggi identified several factors making it difficult for Christians to remain in their homeland, including violence, intimidation, economic hardship, and a lack of jobs. He noted that roadblocks, inaccessible farmland, and restricted work permits create a cumulative effect that discourages families from staying. He argued that when families feel they must leave to ensure a safe future for their children, emigration is no longer a truly free choice.
The seminary rector also expressed concern regarding rising violence from Jewish settlers against Christians, specifically mentioning attacks on homes, vehicles, churches, and fields. He cited Taybeh, the last entirely Christian village in the West Bank, as an example of the challenges facing these communities. Despite these pressures, Poggi noted that Christian communities remain vibrant and hold onto strong hope.

The Episcopal Commission for Life and Family of the CNBB began the National Week of Life on October 1. The observance runs until October 8.
This year's theme is “O sentido da vida” with the motto “Eu vim para que todos tenham vida, e a tenham em abundância” (Jo 10,10). The commission suggests that the opening on October 1 be marked by the Sinal da Alegria, which involves ringing church bells. On October 8, the Sinal da Esperança is encouraged through lighting candles.
Father Rodolfo Chagas Pinho, an advisor to the commission, stated that reflecting on the meaning of life is urgent in a society facing scientific and technological advances alongside loneliness, anxiety, violence, and the loss of hope. The program includes daily themes such as finding meaning inside and outside of digital screens and discovering value in every stage of life.
Organizers provided a presentation to help leaders conduct daily meetings and a resource booklet called Hora da Vida, which is included in the same pamphlet used for the National Family Week. In the Archdiocese of São Luís do Maranhão, the opening took place at the Santuário Nossa Senhora da Conceição in Monte Castelo.

The year's focus centers on the second part of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, covering the celebration of the mystery of Christ in the sacraments. Father Andrea Palmentura, a member of the Carmelitani Scalzi, led a catechesis on the seven sacraments with reference to numbers 1066-1211 of the Catechism. During his reflection, Palmentura described the sacraments as effective signs of grace that correspond to important moments in a Christian's life, noting that the Holy Eucharist is at the center of the group.

Briefing and sources: Bishop Michael Bibi presides over Thanksgiving Mass for Diocesan Services and Choirs. Diocese of Buéa
Bishop Michael Bibi presided over a thanksgiving Mass for diocesan workers and choirs on 3 October 2026 at the Divine Mercy Co-Cathedral in Molyko-Buea. The celebration recognized the contributions, talents, and time provided by choristers and staff serving various departments within the Diocese of Buea.
During his homily, Bishop Bibi encouraged workers and singers to view their daily responsibilities as a way to evangelize and as a service to God rather than just to people. He urged the groups to work together as a team and noted that diligent work performed with the right spirit serves as a Christian witness. The Bishop also cautioned the faithful against despising any form of honest work.
