Bishop Robert E. Barron met Pope Leo XIV for a private audience at the Vatican on Oct. 1, where the pope expressed support for the work of Word on Fire. Bishop Barron, who has led the Diocese of Winona-Rochester since 2022, described the meeting in the Apostolic Palace as a comfortable and productive conversation covering various topics.

During the audience, the Chicago-born pope reportedly connected with the bishop through their shared hometown. Bishop Barron noted that the meeting was a delightful experience with the successor of Peter.

The bishop traveled to Rome to ordain 18 American seminarians from the Pontifical North American College to the diaconate. In an interview at the U.S. Embassy in Italy on Sept. 30, Bishop Barron remarked that the pope's presence and charisma have a positive impact on Americans and young people.

Pope Leo XIV joined 700 children at the Lourdes Grotto in the Vatican Gardens on Thursday, October 1, to pray the Rosary for peace. The gathering launched the worldwide prayer initiative "One Million Children Pray the Rosary."

The children gathered from schools and parishes across Rome. During the devotion, the Pope spoke about children and families in war zones and encouraged people to combine prayer with concrete gestures of love.

Pope Leo XIV joined approximately 1,300 people, including 700 children, to pray the Rosary for peace at the Grotto of Lourdes in the Vatican Gardens on October 1. The gathering marked the start of a week-long prayer initiative organized by Aid to the Church in Need, which involves millions of children and families globally.

The group prayed five decades of the Rosary in Italian, Spanish, Urdu, German, and Arabic to reflect the international scope of the event. Participants offered the prayers to ask for an end to violence, specifically for children and families living in areas affected by war.

In a message to the children, Pope Leo XIV encouraged them to ask Jesus and Mary for peace for all children worldwide. He described the Rosary as a simple prayer and noted that prayer should be paired with acts of love and good deeds to help peace grow. Cardinal Kurt Koch, prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity, stated the initiative allows children to bring the sufferings of the world to God.

Pope Leo XIV received Central African Republic President Faustin-Archange Touadéra for an audience at the Apostolic Palace on the morning of October 1, 2026.

Following the audience with the pope, Touadéra met with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, and Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations. During these talks at the Secretariat of State, officials expressed satisfaction with the existing relations between the Holy See and the Central African Republic and discussed the Church's contributions to Central African society.

The discussions also covered the country's social, political, and humanitarian situation, with a specific focus on the peace process. The leaders also exchanged views on current regional affairs.

Cardinal Luis Tagle received a first-class relic of Blessed Fulton Sheen during the beatification Mass in St. Louis. James Fulton Engstrom, the teenager whose 2010 miraculous healing led to Sheen's beatification, presented the relic to Tagle, who served as the main celebrant.

The relic is Sheen's mandible, the bone that forms the chin and lower jaw. Bishop Louis Tylka of the Diocese of Peoria, Sheen's home diocese, said the choice of the jawbone is significant because of Sheen's ability to preach, teach, and communicate the faith.

Engstrom was declared healed through Sheen's intercession after he was clinically dead for 61 minutes following his birth. According to Church proclamations, the infant began breathing and recovered from medical abnormalities that doctors could not explain. Msgr. Jason Gray, executive director of the Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen Foundation, noted that those healed in the miracle often participate in the beatification process.

Pope Leo XIV blessed Marie-Garance, a 10-year-old girl with multiple disabilities, during a trip to Paris on Sept. 26. The encounter occurred as the pope traveled in the popemobile along the Champs-Elysees before Mass at Place de la Concorde. During the moment, a police officer lifted the girl into his arms so the pope could lean toward her, take her hand, and meet her eyes.

Clotilde Noël, the girl's adoptive mother, said the blessing represented vulnerable people who are often set aside because they are different. Noël noted that Marie-Garance received the blessing with trust and a sense of surrender. Noël's other daughter, Pépa Teresa, also received a papal blessing that day, though she was not photographed. Pépa Teresa uses a wheelchair and has a slightly less severe disability.

The interaction became a widely shared image of the pope's visit to France. Following the encounter, the Noël family received a moment of silence and applause from those present.

Pope Leo XIV has announced the theme for the 61st World Communications Day, which will take place on May 9, 2027. The theme, titled "A New Look: Paying Attention in the Age of Clickbait," invites believers to resist the temptation of using sensational headlines or deceptive tactics to attract attention online.

The Vatican Communications Office stated that true communication involves listening to and caring for others rather than turning attention into a commodity for views. In his message, Magnifica humanitas, the Pope warns that the current attention economy competes for seconds of interest through endless content, which can damage cognitive abilities and the depth of human relationships.

Pope Leo XIV suggests that people need silence, deep learning, reading, and thoughtful dialogue to counter the constant flow of information. He noted that if continuous information replaces reflection and discernment, people may gain fragmented knowledge while losing the ability to understand reality as a whole.

Bishop Indrias Rehmat of Faisalabad, Pakistan, traveled to St. Louis and Peoria to attend the beatification ceremonies for Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen. Following the beatification on Sept. 24, Bishop Rehmat concelebrated a Mass of Thanksgiving on Sept. 25 at the Cathedral of St. Mary in Peoria and venerated the tomb of the newly blessed archbishop.

Bishop Rehmat said he frequently quotes Sheen during homilies, retreats, and talks to seminarians due to the influence of his writings. He noted that his diocese uses modern social communication to spread the Gospel, drawing inspiration from how Sheen used radio and television to preach.

The bishop, who recently celebrated his seventh anniversary as a bishop and 34th anniversary as a priest, said he is currently reading Sheen's autobiography, Treasure in Clay. He reflected on the challenges Sheen faced as a leader and preacher while reading the book's chapters regarding diocesan leadership.

Pope Leo XIV met with the International Commission of Contemplative Dominican Nuns on Sept. 30 to affirm that their contemplative vocation is the heart of the Church's mission rather than something on the margins. Addressing the federation presidents at the Apostolic Palace, the pope encouraged the sisters to move beyond simply maintaining emptying structures and instead listen to what the Holy Spirit asks of them.

The pope noted that the sisters face challenges including aging communities, financial pressures, and uncertainty regarding the future of monasteries. He urged them to avoid a survival spirit and to instead create oases of peace where people can still the restlessness of the world to listen to God. He described contemplation as the breath of a relationship with God, where one welcomes the Word to be transformed by it.

During the meeting, the pope recalled the recent recognition of the heroic virtues of Maria Petra Giordano, a Dominican nun. He also reflected on the early traditions of the Dominican Order, noting that from the beginning, nuns devoted themselves to prayer, study, and penance to accompany the preaching of their brothers. He called on the leaders of the various unions to protect these values and to ensure that visits to monasteries remain moments of prayer, listening, and reconciliation.

The Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) expressed solidarity with Archbishop Alick Banda of Lusaka and the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops on October 1, 2026. SECAM President Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo Besungu sent the message to Archbishop Ignatius Chama, president of the Zambian bishops' conference, following investigations involving Archbishop Banda.

The support follows Archbishop Banda's appearance before the Drug Enforcement Commission of Zambia on September 28, 2026. The message from the African bishops' body also encouraged Catholics in Zambia to remain calm, united, and prayerful. This comes after the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a statement on September 30 expressing concern over arbitrary arrests, the presence of military personnel in civilian areas, and the use of force.

The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to hear a case involving a religious institution's right to build a Marian shrine on residential land in Park Hills, Kentucky. The Missionaries of St. John the Baptist, a Catholic religious association that operates Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel, is petitioning the court to overturn a ruling that blocked its construction plans.

The dispute began after the Park Hills city board granted the association a zoning variance to build a grotto shrine on a residential plot. Neighbors Joel and Elizabeth Frederic filed a lawsuit to block the project, citing concerns about traffic and parking if the shrine becomes a pilgrimage site. The Kentucky Supreme Court ruled against the chapel last December, finding that the city board exceeded its authority by granting the variance.

Lawyers for the Missionaries of St. John the Baptist argue that the state court misconstrued the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act, which prohibits government land use regulations from placing a substantial burden on religious exercise. The association maintains that the shrine is a necessary part of its religious mission.

More than 4,000 people participated in a procession around Balboa Park in San Diego on Sept. 27 to observe the World Day of Migrants and Refugees. Bishop Michael M. Pham led the event to proclaim that all people are sacred. He walked alongside dozens of priests, deacons, and religious men and women, as well as approximately 20 leaders from other faith traditions.

During the gathering, Bishop Pham and San Diego Auxiliary Bishop Felipe Pulido joined Catholic parish priests, an imam, rabbis, an Episcopal priest, and a Unitarian Universalist minister to offer prayers and reflections. Bishop Pham expressed gratitude to the diverse group of participants and noted that the day serves to stand with migrant and refugee brothers and sisters. He also referenced the theme chosen by Pope Leo XIV for the 112th annual observance, "Even just one of these children."

Terre des Hommes Italia reports a global decline in the rights of girls and women due to cuts in international development aid. According to the organization's 2026 Indifesa dossier, nearly all indicators have worsened for the first time in 15 years, reversing decades of progress in education, health, and gender-based violence prevention.

The report highlights several specific impacts of these funding reductions. In 2025, more than 4 million girls were left without prevention programs for early marriage, and up to 12 million women and girls face losing access to essential services to combat gender-based violence. Regarding education, the organization warns that an additional 6 million children could be excluded from school by the end of 2026 compared to 2024 levels.

Health services have also seen significant setbacks. The dossier states that the closure of nearly 1,400 sexual and reproductive health clinics has left 9 million people without access to care. Additionally, access to HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis has dropped by 38% in 62 countries, while funding for condoms has been reduced by as much as 90% in some areas.
