Pope Leo XIV will not travel to Assisi on Oct. 27 to attend an interreligious gathering, according to a Vatican press office statement released Oct. 23. The Pope's medical team advised against the planned helicopter trip as a precautionary measure to allow for continued recovery following lung surgery.

The Pope was scheduled to attend the final day of the "Disarmed and Disarming Peace" meeting, which marks the 40th anniversary of the World Day of Prayer for Peace established by Saint John Paul II. During the visit, the Pope was to join Christian leaders, including Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, for a prayer service in the Lower Basilica of Saint Francis.

The Pope was admitted to Gemelli Hospital in Rome on Oct. 13 after doctors identified a nodule in his lung. Surgeons removed the lower lobe of his right lung, and subsequent tests confirmed the presence of lung adenocarcinoma. While doctors reported on Oct. 21 that no further treatment is necessary, his medical team, Drs. Luigi Carbone and Stefano Margaritora, noted that a chest X-ray shows excellent post-operative progress. The Vatican stated the Pope will send a message of solidarity to those participating in the Assisi gathering.

The Pope greeted the rector, dean, professors, lecturers, and students, noting that the faculty was established on August 16, 1876, following a mandate from Pope Pius IX. He stated that the faculty's creation fulfilled a long tradition of legal study within the Roman College and the Society of Jesus.

During the meeting, the Pope encouraged students to gain a living experience of the relationship between the universal Church and the Bishop of Rome.

The Pope addressed participants at the start of the International Congress on School and University Pastoral Care on October 22, 2026. The address included attendees from various parts of the world and thanked the prefect, secretaries, and officials of the Dicastery for Culture and Education.

The Pope stated that Catholic schools and universities should serve as a home and a familiar place where students are expected. He noted that while young people often show enthusiasm and a spirit of service, many students face existential hardships, including broken families, digital loneliness, feelings of inadequacy, and uncertainty about the future. He suggested that pastoral ministry can support students through a welcoming attitude, such as recognizing their names and noticing their absence.

The Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith published a document titled Venite ad Me: Considerations on the Transmission of the Faith in an Epochal Change on October 22, 2026. The text, signed by prefect Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, addresses challenges in passing the Christian faith between generations caused by cultural shifts, changing family structures, and digital technologies.

The document was written following a request from the late Pope Francis and received approval from Pope Leo XIV on August 21, 2026. It incorporates contributions from 70% of episcopal conferences worldwide. The text is presented as a set of considerations rather than a doctrinal note, meaning it examines various perspectives without claiming to settle the matter.

The eight-chapter document suggests that the Church must move beyond a pastoral focus solely on the catechesis of children and teenagers to include the evangelization of adults. It calls for a renewed emphasis on the kerygma, or the essential proclamation of Christ, to address the crisis where many young people leave the Church after completing formal religious education. The text also engages with ideas from Pope Leo XIV's first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, regarding artificial intelligence.

Working groups from Europe, North America, Africa, Asia, and Latin America met during the second day of the first international conference of The Church of the Sheaves to discuss new missionary pathways. Participants focused on shifting away from a model that divides the Church into permanent givers and permanent receivers.

Archbishop Fortunatus Nwachukwu opened the meeting by stating that every local Church possesses both gifts to give and gifts to receive. Sr. Agnès Sory of the Africa group noted that no local Church acts solely as a giver or a beneficiary, describing the actions of giving, receiving, and sending as inseparable dimensions of missionary communion rather than successive stages.

The conference highlighted that missionary work now circulates between the North and South in all directions, as well as within individual local Churches. The Africa group noted that while the continent has long held monastic traditions, the scale and visibility of its contributions are increasing. This shift aims to move beyond fixed roles to treat different regions as partners. The group referenced a statement by Pope Leo XIV in Paris on 26 September, which noted that no one is so poor that they have nothing to give and no one is so rich that they have nothing to receive.

Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) has called on Egyptian authorities to release six Christian men detained for more than two weeks in the Minya province. The men, aged between 17 and 23, face investigations for allegedly insulting Islam after posting a video on TikTok.

The video, posted on October 4, used audio from the 2018 Egyptian comedy film Khalawis, which depicts prisoners who are unfamiliar with Quranic prayers. The men reenacted a scene from the film. A neighbor redistributed the video with condemnatory comments, which led to reports being made to authorities by villagers.

The six men, who are residents of Ezbet Tanious in the Samalut district, were handed over to police for questioning on October 6. They were reportedly held with the understanding they would be released once local tensions subsided, but they remained in detention as of an October 22 report from ADF. Kelsey Zorzi, senior counsel and vice president of international advocacy for ADF, stated that the group is seeking the immediate release of the men and the dismissal of all charges.

The Vatican Secretariat of State has prohibited pilgrims participating in the international Summorum Pontificum Ad Petri Sedem pilgrimage from entering St. Peter’s Basilica. The restriction affects a procession scheduled for Saturday, October 24, 2026, intended to venerate the tomb of St. Peter.

Christian Marquant, president of the French association Paix Liturgique and a lead organizer of the pilgrimage, announced the decision during a meeting at the Augustinianum Institute in Rome. Marquant stated that a letter from the Secretariat of State informed organizers that the procession would not be permitted to enter the basilica. He also noted that authorities had alleged the Mass celebrated during the previous year's pilgrimage was instrumentalized.

The pilgrimage brings together priests, religious, and lay faithful from various countries to observe the traditional liturgy using the 1962 Roman Missal. This decision follows previous restrictions that denied these faithful the ability to celebrate Mass within the basilica. While the group is barred from the basilica, the procession is scheduled to proceed from the Basilica of Santi Celso e Giuliano to St. Peter’s Square.

The Catholic University of America has started a study to investigate why some priests leave public ministry within a few years of ordination. University official Sara Perla said the research addresses a perception among some bishops and Catholic leaders that more men are leaving the priesthood during their early years. The study seeks to determine if this perception is supported by data and what factors contribute to these departures.

The research is funded by the Knights of Columbus and led by Brandon Vaidyanathan, a sociology professor and director of the university's Institutional Flourishing Lab. Vaidyanathan is collaborating with Stephen Cranney, Maureen Day, Joseph Davis, and Caitlin Fitzgerald. The Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate at Georgetown University will compile an anonymized data set including priests ordained for United States dioceses between 2006 and 2025.

The project will use both quantitative and qualitative methods to examine the reasons behind these decisions. The university expects to release the results in the fall of 2027.

Bishop Robert Barron issued a statement on October 22 criticizing a German Catholic academy following renewed controversy over an award he received in 2025. The bishop described the institution as having reached a state of clownish irrelevance due to what he called an inane and manufactured controversy.

The dispute involves the Josef Pieper Prize, which Barron received in Münster in July 2025. At that time, various Catholic and political groups protested the award, alleging that the bishop promotes exclusionary identity politics. Barron dismissed the protests, characterizing them as consisting of a small group of protesters and a statement from the theological faculty of the University of Münster. He stated that the faculty's statement lacked sophistication and showed no familiarity with his work.

The news website katholisch.de reported on October 21 that the Josef Pieper Foundation has acknowledged mistakes in its handling of the initial controversy. The foundation is reportedly planning a conference regarding Barron and his theology.

A panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled on Oct. 20 that a multifaith coalition may continue its legal challenge to a Trump administration policy regarding immigration enforcement. The divided panel reversed an April 2025 decision by the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, which had ruled that the coalition lacked standing to challenge the policy.

The lawsuit, filed in 2025 by more than two dozen religious organizations, contests the rescission of long-standing restrictions on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions at sensitive locations. The administration's policy reduces restrictions on arrests at sites such as houses of worship, schools, and hospitals, though it maintains exceptions for national security or public safety threats.

Kelsi Brown Corkran, lead counsel for the plaintiffs and director for the Institute for Constitutional Advocacy and Protection at Georgetown Law, stated that the decision recognizes the harm caused to religious communities when the rescission of the sensitive locations policy occurred. The coalition represents 27 Jewish and Christian denominations and organizations.

Addressing participants in the Paul VI Hall, the pope said educational institutions should provide environments where people notice a student's absence and welcome them back.

The pope identified several hardships facing young people, including broken families, digital loneliness, and feelings of inadequacy. He noted that many students feel anonymous in schools and universities and may feel paralyzed by a fear of making mistakes or failing to meet expectations.

Catholic communities in Scandinavia are discussing how to manage an increase in new converts following a rise in interest in the faith. Ragnhild Aadland Høen, public affairs officer for the Council of Catholic Bishops in Norway, reported that the Church is seeing a significant rise in adult initiation courses and confirmations. She noted that some young people are turning to the faith after experiences with pagan and New Age practices.

In Oslo, Bishop Fredrik Hansen marked World Mission Sunday on October 18 by revealing plans for the first synod in his diocese dedicated to evangelical needs and challenges.

Nik Bredholt, parish council chairman at St. Ansgar’s Cathedral in Copenhagen, said that while growth is not as pronounced as in Norway or Sweden, many people are discovering the Church through the internet. The bishop of Knoxville, Tennessee, told The Pillar that adding prayers to the Mass is not appropriate. He stated that a plan to limit the St. Michael prayer and other public devotions before and after Mass in the diocese is intended to respect Catholics who wish to pray silently in parish churches.

The bishop said he hopes priests will provide good catechesis regarding these changes to prayer and the liturgy of the Church.

Briefing and sources: Bring Back the Betrothal. The Catholic Thing

K.E. Colombini of The Catholic Thing suggests that the resurgence of traditional liturgical practices should extend to the betrothal rite.

Colombini notes that while Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI facilitated a renewed interest in the Traditional Latin Mass of the 1962 Roman Missal, other devotional traditions have also seen a return. The author observes that many Catholics who grew up after the Second Vatican Council have sought out these older forms of worship.

The article mentions that some engaged couples are now opting for short betrothal rites at parishes or oratories that offer the traditional Mass. Colombini contrasts these traditional rites with modern marriage preparation requirements, such as weekend retreats or specific community service, which the author suggests can sometimes exceed reasonable expectations.

The relics arrived as part of the Journey of Grace tour, a 140-stop program organized by the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes that began in September and will conclude next August.

Housed in a 24-karat gold-plated reliquary, the first-class relics consist of actual body parts. The collection includes strands of hair, fragments of her fifth and sixth ribs, kneecaps, a sample of muscle from her right femur, and fragments of other muscle and skin.

Father Jeremy Canna, pastor of the Shrine Church of St. Bernadette, said the presence of these relics provides people an opportunity to get closer to the saint. St. Bernadette reported apparitions of the Virgin Mary in a grotto in Lourdes in 1858.

Rodríguez stated that believing the universe can grant wishes, using the law of attraction to manifest outcomes, and relying on good-luck charms are practices that do not align with the faith. He also identified horoscopes, astrology, and the belief that speaking words can force reality to change as incompatible practices. Rodríguez noted that while sacramentals like rosaries or crucifixes are used in the Church, they do not function as luck-bringing objects but instead direct the faithful toward God. He explained that Christian prayer involves trusting in God's will rather than attempting to manipulate reality.

Bishop Charles Kasonde stated that lay Catholics are the primary force behind the Church's mission during a visit to the Mombasa Archdiocese in Kenya. Speaking on the 100th anniversary of World Mission Sunday, the Bishop of Solwezi Diocese in Zambia noted that because the laity constitutes the majority of the Church, their voluntary work carries the Church's mission forward.

Bishop Kasonde observed that many faithful members perform their duties without pay or reward. He noted that the high level of contributions to the Pontifical Mission Societies in Mombasa serves as a motivation for this work. He encouraged all baptized Christians to use their talents to make Christ known within their communities.
