History

Erected in 1842 with its episcopal see at Sydney, New South Wales, the Archdiocese of Sydney (Latin: Archidioecesis Sydneyensis) is a Latin Church territory of the Catholic Church. As metropolitan see it presides over the suffragan dioceses of Armidale, Bathurst, Broken Bay, Lismore, Maitland-Newcastle, Parramatta, Wagga Wagga, Wilcannia-Forbes and Wollongong.

  • Priests from Archdiocese of Sydney witness Fulton Sheen beatification

    Three priests from the Archdiocese of Sydney attended the beatification Mass of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen on September 24 in St. Louis, Missouri. The ceremony at The Dome at America’s Center was attended by an estimated 50,000 Catholics. Fr. Noel Custodio, Fr. Roberto Keryakos, and Fr. Gerard Woo Ling were joined by Fr. Jack Green of the Diocese of Parramatta and Fr. Jason Rushton SJM, an Australian priest serving in Kazakhstan. Fr. Keryakos, an assistant priest at St. Mary’s Cathedral, told EWTN that the pilgrimage honored a priest whose teachings helped transform his relationship with Christ in the Eucharist. He said he was introduced to Sheen while at the Seminary of the Good Shepherd in Homebush, Sydney, where seminarians practiced a daily Holy Hour, a prayer practice promoted by Sheen. Keryakos described Sheen as a charismatic storyteller who used intelligence and warmth to make profound truths accessible.

  • Pope Leo XIV argues for faith in public life in France

    Pope Leo XIV argued that religious institutions and the state can collaborate to protect human dignity and the common good during his visit to France. Speaking to government officials, civil society leaders, and the diplomatic corps at the Élysée Palace on Sept. 25, the pope addressed the country's tradition of secularism, known as laïcité. He stated that true secularity does not require excluding religion from education or the public sphere, but rather encourages dialogue between the state and religious institutions. French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the pope at the Élysée Palace, offering a similar view of the nation's secular tradition. Macron said that laïcité is not a negation of religion and ensures the freedom to believe or not believe both in private and in public. He noted that the pope's message would appeal to the conscience of all French people. The visit to Paris is part of a larger apostolic journey scheduled from Sept. 25 to 28. This marks the first official papal state visit to France in 18 years.

  • University Catholics launch Eucharist28 preparations with campus procession

    University of Sydney students and staff began preparations for the 2028 International Eucharistic Congress with a Mass and Eucharistic procession on Thursday, September 24. Approximately 130 participants joined Bishop Tony Percy and Bishop Antoine-Charbel Tarabay as they carried the Blessed Sacrament in a monstrance through the campus. During the procession, the bishops blessed the four corners of the university's Quadrangle to symbolically extend the blessing to the institution. During the Mass, Fr. William Loh OP spoke about the reach of God's mercy and its visibility through the Eucharist. Sr. Susanna Edmunds OP later encouraged students to share their faith in the period leading up to the congress in Sydney. Natalie Ambrose, the university chaplaincies coordinator, noted that the public procession across the four campuses serves as a way for students to witness to their faith and provides an opportunity for other students to encounter the Eucharist.

  • Pope Leo XIV leads candlelight rosary procession in Lourdes

    Pope Leo XIV led tens of thousands of pilgrims in a candlelight Rosary procession at the Marian shrine of Lourdes on September 27, 2026. The procession marked the conclusion of the Pope's three-day apostolic journey to France. Walking behind an illuminated statue of the Virgin Mary, the Pope held a large candle in his right hand and a Rosary in his left. During the event, pilgrims prayed five decades of the glorious mysteries in multiple languages. As the Lourdes hymn "Ave Maria" was sung between mysteries, participants in the square before the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary lifted their candles to create a sea of lights. In his address, the Pope described himself as a pilgrim among pilgrims and stated the gathering was a response to the request Our Lady made to priests through Saint Bernadette to hold processions. He encouraged the faithful to entrust their personal intentions and the intentions of the world to the Virgin Mary. He also noted that sick individuals serve as witnesses to how faith and love can transform life.
