Established on September 2, 1870 as the Apostolic Vicariate of Southwestern Hupeh, renamed after its see in 1924, and promoted to the Diocese of Yichang on April 11, 1946. Its cathedral is the Cathedral of St. Francis in Yichang; the see has been vacant since the death of Bishop Francis Lu Shouwang in 2011.

History

A suffragan Latin diocese of central China, Yichang, also rendered Ichang (Latin: Iciamen(sis), Chinese: 宜昌), belongs to the ecclesiastical province of the Metropolitan Archbishopric of Hankou while depending on the missionary Roman Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. Its episcopal see is the Cathedral of St. Francis in the city of Yichang, Hubei province. No statistics are available, and the see has been vacant since 2012.
