History

Bishop Michael F. Burbidge of the Diocese of Arlington announced several clergy changes on September 23, 2026. Reverend Ramon Dominguez, a priest from the Diocese of Fall River in Massachusetts, joined the Diocese of Arlington on September 21, 2026. Deacon Vincent M. Kapral, a permanent deacon from the Diocese of Richmond, also joined the Diocese of Arlington, effective September 12, 2026. Additionally, Reverend John T.B. Trong moved from the Saint Rose of Lima Priests’ Retirement Villa in Annandale to a private residence outside the Diocese of Arlington on September 22, 2026.

A Message from Archbishop Henning, Bishop McManus, Bishop da Cunha, and Bishop Byrne for the Clergy, Religious, and Lay Faithful of Massachusetts
Archbishop Henning, Bishop McManus, Bishop da Cunha, and Bishop Byrne issued a joint message to the clergy, religious, and lay faithful of Massachusetts criticizing the state's new abortion legislation. The bishops described the Prioritizing Patient Access to Care Act as a tragedy that puts pregnant mothers and unborn children at risk. The bishops stated that the law allows abortions for any reason throughout pregnancy and permits these procedures to occur in settings other than hospitals. They noted that the legislation contradicts an appeal made by Pope Leo XIV in June during his visit to Spain, in which he called for the protection of human life from conception to its natural end. The leaders further said that Catholic legislators who helped pass the law caused grave scandal. They argued the law falsely teaches that certain human beings are unworthy of life and suggests that motherhood is incompatible with a woman's well-being. The bishops maintained that viable alternatives to abortion exist for women facing difficult medical diagnoses.

Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Fall River to Celebrate 100 Years of Service
Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Fall River will host a Centennial Gala on Thursday, Oct. 22, to mark more than 100 years of service to individuals and families in Southeastern Massachusetts. The event begins at 6 p.m. at Rachel’s Lakeside in Dartmouth. The gala will bring together community partners and supporters to recognize those currently carrying out the organization's mission. Guests will have the opportunity to meet more than 20 program directors who manage various services designed to help people facing challenges throughout the region. Susan Mazzarella, CEO of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Fall River, said the event serves as a way to express gratitude to the community and look toward the future of the organization's mission.
