Archdiocese of Milwaukee

History

Southeast Wisconsin in the United States is served by the Archdiocese of Milwaukee (Latin: Archidiœcesis Milvauchiensis), the metropolitan see of the ecclesiastical province of Milwaukee. Founded in 1843 as a diocese, it was raised to an archdiocese in 1875. Its archbishop is Jeffrey S. Grob.

• St. Matthias Parish Celebrates 175 Years of Faith

  St. Matthias Parish celebrated its 175th anniversary, marking nearly two centuries of Catholic life on the southwest side of Milwaukee. The anniversary festivities began August 30 with a Mass and a parish picnic, and concluded September 13 with a Mass celebrated by Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan. The parish traces its origins to approximately 1845, when German Catholics formed a community called Holy Cross. Bishop John Martin Henni formally established St. Matthias Parish in 1850, and the first church was dedicated the following year at a location known as Whiskey Corners. As the community expanded, a brick Gothic Revival church was built in 1883. That building served the parish for over 80 years until the current church was constructed in the mid-1960s and dedicated in May 1967.

• Sister Miriam James Heidland announces discernment of new community

  Sister Miriam James Heidland, SOLT, announced on Sept. 21 that she is entering a period of public discernment to establish a new religious community named Friends of the Bridegroom. Heidland, a speaker, author, and podcast host, stated that the move follows several years of private discernment. The proposed community has the blessing of the Sisters of the Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity (SOLT) and Archbishop Jeffrey S. Grob of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. Heidland has served as the executive director of the Friends of the Bridegroom apostolate alongside Father John Burns of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. The apostolate seeks to renew the Church by healing and expanding the priesthood and consecrated life. Heidland noted that her experience in healing ministry with priests, bishops, and religious sisters revealed a need for the renewal of these vocations. The new community would consist of priests, religious sisters, and laity working toward this goal.

• Dominican President Leanne Giese to Retire

  Leanne Giese will retire as president of Dominican High School at the end of the 2026-27 academic year. Giese has served at the Whitefish Bay Catholic school for nearly 19 years, having joined in 2008 as director of advancement before becoming president in 2012. During her presidency, Giese led two capital campaigns to expand academic and athletic facilities and oversaw the renovation of St. Dominic Chapel. She also managed the school's transition in sponsorship from the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa to Dominican Veritas Ministries. Under her leadership, the school's endowment grew by nearly 400% to increase financial assistance, and the Archdiocese of Milwaukee awarded the school Exemplary Recognition for Mission and Catholic Identity. The school's board of directors has formed a search committee and expects to name a new president by spring 2027. The successor is scheduled to begin on July 1, 2027. Giese will serve as a consultant during the 2027-28 academic year.
