La Salette marks 180 years since the Virgin Mary appeared to two children in France. On September 19, 1846, Maximin Giraud and Mélanie Calvat reported seeing a weeping woman while tending livestock near La Salette-Fallavaux.

The children described seeing an intense light followed by a woman sitting with her face in her hands. The woman spoke to them about the need for prayer, conversion, and penance. Her message specifically addressed the profanation of Sundays and the irreverent use of God's name.

The bishop of Grenoble, Philibert de Bruillard, recognized the apparition five years later following a canonical investigation. The site in the Isère department has since become a major Marian sanctuary. Representatives from the sanctuary and Father Antoni Skałba, MS, noted that the message regarding spiritual conversion remains relevant today.

Nearly 200 men are participating in the three rounds of retreats. The final session is scheduled for October 9 to 10, 2026. Dariusz Składanek, the chairman of the extraordinary ministers for the Diocese of Radom, noted that the days of prayer strengthen their service to those who are ill.

To serve as a minister, a man must be between 35 and 65 years old. Candidates must complete specific liturgical and theological training and maintain a reputation for piety and respect among the clergy and the faithful.

Priest breaks down in tears during consecration

Father Brent Bowman broke down in tears during the consecration of wine while celebrating Mass on Sept. 14 at St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church in Hopkins, Minnesota. The emotional moment occurred during the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and was captured on a parish livestream that later spread across social media.

In a statement released through his archdiocese, Bowman described the event as a private spiritual experience rather than a Eucharistic miracle. He said he felt the weight of God's power descending on the altar and felt the heaviness of the substantial presence of Jesus in the chalice. Bowman explained that as he spoke the words of consecration, he felt an internal knowledge of the power and reality of those words, which made it difficult for him to speak.

During the Mass, Bowman paused for six seconds before continuing the prayer through tears. He sobbed for nearly a minute at the altar and struggled to lift the chalice above his head. He continued to weep as he knelt before the blood of Christ following the consecration.

Bishop Johan Bonny has begun preparing married men for priestly ordination to address a shortage of priests in the Diocese of Antwerp. The bishop told the Belgian newspaper La Libre Belgique that the diocese currently has fewer than 70 priests under the age of 70, and nearly two thirds of them are from other countries.

The shortage has weakened pastoral care in Flanders, leaving the diocese without priests dedicated solely to schools, youth movements, or hospitals. Additionally, only one of the five prisons in the Antwerp province has a permanent chaplain. While Bishop Bonny acknowledges the importance of priests from other countries, he stated that necessity compels him to seek local solutions because the region has exhausted its reserves of vocations.

In June, Bishop Bonny traveled to Rome to discuss the situation with Cardinal Lazarus You Heung-sik, prefect of the Dicastery for the Clergy, and Cardinal Mario Grech, secretary general of the Synod of Bishops. The bishop reported that both cardinals intended to present the matter to Pope Leo XIV. The Vatican has not yet announced a decision regarding the proposal to ordain married men.

The Holy See is submitting a documentary film to the Academy Awards for consideration for the first time in its history. The 39-minute short film, titled Green Lava, follows Giacomo Mattivi, an Italian man living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Directed by Lia Beltrami and Ali Aksu, the documentary was produced by the Vatican through the company Emotions to Generate Change in collaboration with Vatican News, Vatican Media, and the Dicastery for Communication. The film was shot in the Dolomites, a mountain range in northern Italy, and depicts Mattivi navigating the limitations of his illness and the loss of his brother, who died from the same condition.

To qualify for the best documentary short film category, the production will undergo commercial screenings at the Lumiere Music Hall in Beverly Hills between September 18 and September 24, 2026. Because the short film category allows independent productions without formal government or national committee endorsement, the film does not compete as an official representative of the Vatican.

Father Jarosław Grabowski, editor in chief of the Catholic weekly Niedziela, says the publication maintains its mission of fidelity to the Gospel and Church teaching as it celebrates its 100th anniversary.

Writing on the centennial, Grabowski noted that the weekly addresses genuine spiritual and human problems that the modern world often ignores or mocks. He described the publication as a voice that points toward unchanging moral values amidst contemporary media noise.

The history of the weekly is closely linked to Polish history, including periods of war, post-war reconstruction, a shutdown by communist authorities in 1953, and its return in 1981. Grabowski added that the pandemic and increasing secularization in society have also shaped the identity of the publication.

Pope Leo XIV declined a request from French President Emmanuel Macron to walk together through Notre Dame Cathedral during the pope's visit to France. According to Vida Nueva, Macron requested a private moment with the pope inside the cathedral, which the French state has funded for reconstruction, rather than attending the Vespers scheduled for September 25. The Vatican rejected this diplomatic request to keep the pope's apostolic journey separate from a state visit.

The trip to France includes several other changes to traditional protocol. Vida Nueva reports that the Vatican has downgraded the visit by removing a state dinner and the presentation of the Legion of Honour. Religión Digital noted that this effort to separate the religious nature of the trip from political appearances was also a pattern during the pope's previous travels in Spain.

Bishop Artur Ważny led a diocesan pilgrimage for people from the Diocese of Sosnowiec to the passion and Mary sanctuary in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska on Saturday, September 12. During the central Eucharist, the bishop shared a message using five simple images to help pilgrims reflect on their lives, comparing them to the five fingers of Mary's hand.

In his homily, Bishop Ważny used the images of roots, the heart, the word, hands, and the home to describe spiritual growth. He told pilgrims they do not need to be perfect for God to work through them, provided they are built upon a rock. Regarding the image of roots, the bishop explained that the most important aspects of faith happen in secret through silence, prayer, and a true relationship with God, rather than through outward religious displays.
