Archbishop Timothy Broglio of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, has instructed Catholics assigned to a firing squad to request to be excused from the duty. In a statement issued Oct. 12, the archbishop said participating in the execution is contrary to Church teaching. He compared the requirement to request recusal to the way he would handle a case involving a procured abortion.
The instruction follows the approved execution of Nidal Malik Hasan, a former U.S. Army psychiatrist convicted of killing 13 people and injuring 32 others during a 2009 mass shooting at Fort Hood, Texas. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth stated on Oct. 8 that the execution is scheduled for Dec. 3 at Fort Hood and will be livestreamed to the public.
Archbishop Broglio, who has led the military archdiocese since 2008, described the planned livestreamed execution as a public spectacle of barbarically killing adversaries. He encouraged all people of good will to ask for the decision to be reconsidered and urged Catholics involved in the proceedings to disassociate from them. The Fort Hood military base falls under the pastoral jurisdiction of the Archdiocese for the Military Services.
