    Pope Leo XIV

Pope Leo XIV met with the International Commission of Dominican Contemplative Nuns at the Vatican on September 30, 2026, to discuss the role of contemplative life in the Church. During the audience, the Pope noted that the meeting occurred shortly after the recognition of the heroic virtues of Sister Maria Petra Giordano, a professed nun of the Order of Preachers.

The Pope told the nuns that the contemplative vocation is the heart of the Church's mission rather than something on its margins. He described silence as an act of will that helps build solid relationships through the Word of God. He encouraged the communities to offer oases of peace where people can escape external anxieties to hear the voice of God.

Addressing modern challenges, the Pope urged the sisters to cultivate silence in a world marked by speed and haste. He advised them not to focus on the difficulty of maintaining emptying buildings due to declining vocations, but instead to listen to the Holy Spirit to preserve their vocation.

Pope Leo XIV established the Diocese of Joypurhat in northwestern Bangladesh on March 25, 2026. The new diocese was formed from territories belonging to the Diocese of Rajshahi and the Diocese of Dinajpur and operates as a suffragan diocese of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Dhaka.

Paul Gomes serves as the first bishop of the diocese, having taken possession of the see last June. The Catholic community in Joypurhat consists of approximately 25,000 faithful across 13 parishes. Most members belong to indigenous and tribal groups, including the Santal, Oraon, Mahali, Munda, and Paharia peoples. Bishop Gomes noted in an interview with Agenzia Fides that these communities are among the most socially vulnerable in the country, often working as small-scale farmers or agricultural day laborers.

Because the diocese lacks permanent facilities, the Mary Help of Christians Parish in Khanjanpur, managed by the Salesians, currently serves as the cathedral. Bishop Gomes stated that the diocese needs to build an episcopal seat and a pastoral center.

Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher spoke at the Religions and Diplomacy conference in Rome on September 29, noting that the current world order is facing a severe test. Speaking at Palazzo San Calisto, the Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations said religious communities can help ease tensions between peoples by speaking to consciences, provided that faith does not become a banner for division or a tool for identifying opposing fronts.

Gallagher noted that in a multipolar world, religious influence has shifted rather than receded. He suggested that this shift should be viewed with realism instead of being treated as a security or public order problem. During the same session, Cardinal Baldassare Reina called for a change in language to remove the name of God from the logic of war.

The conference was organized by the International Association Carità Politica to mark its 30th anniversary. The association presented a document committing to cultural exchanges and joint action to revive dialogue. The gathering concludes on September 30, and the association plans to convene religious leaders in the coming months to implement these commitments.

Attorneys general from Louisiana, Alabama, and Arkansas filed a lawsuit on September 30 challenging abortion shield laws in New York, California, and Massachusetts. The lawsuit asks the Supreme Court to hear the challenge against these laws, which were passed to prevent the prosecution of abortion providers in states with restrictions or bans.

The attorneys general argued that these shield laws enable providers to bypass their own state's abortion restrictions by protecting those who mail abortion-inducing drugs from states where the procedure is legal to states where it is restricted. The suit also claims these laws frequently allow for the anonymous or nearly anonymous mailing of abortion drugs.

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill stated that the state will not allow other states or distributors to threaten Louisiana's sovereignty or violate its laws. New York Attorney General Letitia James responded to the announcement by saying the lawsuit seeks to allow the other states to impose their abortion bans on New York and punish doctors for providing legal healthcare.

    Pope Leo XIV

Pope Leo XIV met with the International Commission of Contemplative Dominican Nuns on Sept. 30, affirming that their contemplative vocation is the heart of the Church's mission rather than something on the margins. During the meeting, the pope encouraged the federation presidents to lead their communities through challenges such as aging populations, financial pressures, and uncertainty regarding the future of monasteries.

The pope urged leaders to discern how the Holy Spirit is calling contemplative life to respond to modern needs, suggesting they look beyond preserving existing structures toward a renewed vocation. He described contemplation as a way to bring the world before God and called on the presidents to protect the values of silence, listening, and prayer. He also noted that visits to monasteries should serve as moments of prayer, reconciliation, and fraternal correction.

In his address, the pope referenced the recent recognition of the heroic virtues of Maria Petra Giordano, a Dominican nun. He also reflected on the Dominican tradition where nuns support preaching through prayer, study, and penance. Citing St. Thomas Aquinas, the pope stated that all true preaching must stem from a deep relationship with God found in silence and listening.

Bishop Robert Barron of Winona-Rochester, Minnesota, argued that Catholic theology is compatible with the founding principles of the United States during a keynote address on Sept. 30. Speaking at an America at 250 event at the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See in Rome, Barron noted that while the Church and the nation have had a rocky relationship over the last 250 years, he sees no fundamental tension between being an American and a Catholic bishop.

U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See Brian Burch attended the embassy-sponsored event and told EWTN News that the American experiment shares common ground with Catholic social doctrine. Burch suggested the current era is a unique moment in history because of the confluence of an American pope, Leo XIV, and a U.S. administration containing many Catholics.

Archbishop Hubertus van Megen, the new apostolic nuncio to Germany, warned the German Bishops' Conference on September 28 that the Church must not chart a separate course from Rome. Speaking at the fall plenary assembly in Fulda, the Dutch prelate stated that the papacy and the Eucharist are the two pillars of the Church's visible unity. He cautioned that without these, the Church could become a mere federation of separate communities or a nongovernmental organization with a Christian veneer.

The nuncio described the pope as the safeguard of faith and ecclesial communion, while noting that the Eucharist sacramentally nourishes this unity. He emphasized that Rome serves as the visible center and guarantor of the unity of the universal Church, to which the German Church belongs. During his address, van Megen also noted that no local Church has precedence over another.

The remarks come amid Vatican concerns regarding Germany's Synodal Way, a reform process involving proposals such as women's ordination, blessings for same-sex couples, and expanded lay preaching. The bishops' assembly, which runs through October 1, is also discussing the theological impact of Pope Leo XIV's encyclical *Magnifica Humanitas* regarding artificial intelligence, as well as sexual abuse investigations, migration, and adult baptisms.

    Pope Leo XIV

Pope Leo XIV sent a letter to the Chicago White Sox encouraging the team to promote friendship and solidarity. The Sept. 9 message was addressed to team chairman Jerry Reinsdorf and arrived at Rate Field on Tuesday, the same day the team played its first game of the AL Wild Card Series against the Houston Astros.

The pope wrote the letter in response to a message from Reinsdorf following an Aug. 11 game against the Cincinnati Reds. During that game, the team held a pope-themed event where fans received stylized black-and-gold miters and participated in the sign of peace. Dominican Sister Mary Jo Sobieck of Springfield, Ill., threw the ceremonial first pitch.

In his letter, the Chicago-born pope expressed hope that the team would act as a witness to peace and working together in harmony. He referenced his Feb. 6 letter, Life in Abundance, noting that sport can serve as a school of life where participants learn that true abundance comes from respect and sharing rather than victory at any cost.

The White Sox won their playoff opener 6-3. Manager Will Venable said the support from the pope meant a lot to the team.

Archdiocese of Sydney priests receive Accidental Counsellor training
    discussEducationNew4h ago
    The Catholic Weekly

    Diocese of Sydney

Priests in the Archdiocese of Sydney are receiving Accidental Counsellor training to help them manage unplanned emotional conversations with parishioners. Rocky Biasi, who delivered the training, stated that the program is not intended to turn priests into psychologists. Instead, it provides practical skills for the first few minutes of an encounter when a person is sharing emotional distress.

The training teaches priests how to remain steady and connect with others before attempting to solve their problems. Biasi identified three common mistakes to avoid during these moments: fixing the problem, offering a silver lining, or providing unsolicited wisdom. He noted that while these responses often come from a good place, they can prevent a person from feeling understood if offered too early.

The program also instructs priests on how to recognize when a person's needs require the involvement of a professional therapist or counselor. This training addresses the spontaneous interactions priests often face, such as conversations after Mass, late-night phone calls, or visits to hospital bedsides.

“Liberty Preserved”: The Foundation of Our Freedom

    Public Discourse

The essay “Liberty Preserved: The Foundation of Our Freedom” won the 2026 Fidelity Month high school essay contest. The contest asked students to connect themes of Fidelity Month with patriotism as the nation approaches its semiquincentennial.

In the essay, Lara Cratty discusses the historical tension between religious instruction and civil liberties. She highlights a 1784 proposal by Virginia Governor Patrick Henry to use tax money to hire Christian teachers for schools. While Henry argued this would promote piety, James Madison countered in his “Memorial and Remonstrance Against Religious Assessments” that state-funded religious instruction threatened civil freedom. Madison argued that government interference in religion could lead to the loss of other fundamental rights, such as the right to vote.

The essay also notes the religious diversity among the Founding Fathers, including Episcopalians, deists, and those with varying beliefs. Cratty mentions that figures like Presbyterian minister John Witherspoon also addressed the role of religion within a democracy during that era.

SSPX Consecrations Unmask Leo XIV: Archbishop Viganò on Rome’s “Operation of Error”
    discussVaticanNew3h ago
    The Remnant

Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò claims that the recent consecration of four bishops by the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) without Vatican approval has exposed the true nature of Pope Leo XIV and the Church. According to columnist Robert Morrison for The Remnant, these consecrations have highlighted shifts in the Vatican's stance more than in the SSPX itself.

Morrison notes that a September 16 document from the Vatican regarding the Declaration on the Relation of the Church to Non-Catholic Religions, Nostra Aetate, aligns with Freemasonic ideals condemned by previous popes. The report cites paragraph 53 of the document, which states that interreligious dialogue aims to build a fraternal society capable of accepting differences rather than founding a single world religion. Morrison suggests this approach reflects an embrace of anti-Catholic views.

St. Andrew the Apostle Parish is providing weekend food bags to more than 60 children facing food insecurity at Mars Hill Elementary School. This program grew from the parish's role as an emergency relief center following Hurricane Helene, when it distributed food, water, and clothing to residents in Madison County.

The Catholic Charities Diocese of Charlotte Western Regional Office has joined the effort this school year by providing funding, supplemental food donations, and reusable bags. Jesse Boeckermann, a Western Region official for Catholic Charities, noted that partnering with rural parishes helps reach people who may struggle to travel to Asheville for assistance.

A group of approximately 10 parishioners, led by Vicki Fedor, prepares the food bags every Friday. St. Andrew the Apostle is the only Catholic church in Madison County and is led by Father Anthony Mbanefo, MSP, who also leads Sacred Heart parish in Burnsville.

John and Polly Snider spoke with Plough editor Santiago Ramos about their decades-long friendship with Pope Leo XIV, whom they know as Bob. The friendship began in the summer of 1980 during a ten-week Clinical Pastoral Education program at a hospital in Minneapolis.

At the time, Robert Prevost was a seminarian training to become a priest, while John Snider was studying to become a Lutheran pastor. The group of five participants engaged in hospital chaplaincy training that included a practice called a verbatim. This required students to record and report ministerial encounters, such as meetings with people on their deathbeds, to the group to discuss their words and emotions.

U.S. bishops post $43.6M gain despite refugee-program revenue plunge

    Catholic News Agency

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops reported a $43.6 million increase in net assets between 2024 and 2025, according to recent financial audits. The conference ended 2025 with $383.9 million in net assets, up from $340.4 million the previous year.

Chieko Noguchi, a spokesperson for the conference, attributed the growth primarily to the performance of a long-term investment pool. This pool earned $16.3 million in interest and dividends and saw $27.2 million in unrealized gains from positive market performance, resulting in a 15.2% total return.

The increase occurred even as funding for refugee programs dropped from $180.46 million to $72.23 million. The conference stated it did not renew refugee resettlement agreements after a federal suspension of grants made the programs financially unsustainable. This contraction led to a reduction in staff and caused total operating expenses to fall by approximately $100 million.

Pope Leo XIV argues in his first encyclical, Magnifica humanitas, that the primary challenge of artificial intelligence is its connection to the technocratic paradigm. In the document, the pope suggests that this paradigm defines human and natural relationships through power, profit, and efficiency, which fosters consumerism and a disregard for humanity.

To address the digital revolution, Leo writes that society must separate technology from this paradigm. For the past year, the pope has maintained that Catholic education serves as an essential tool for this effort.

Archbishop Hebda: Priest Father Philip Conklin affiliates with SSPX

    The Catholic Spirit

Archbishop Bernard Hebda informed parishioners of St. Michael and St. Mary in Stillwater that Father Philip Conklin has affiliated with the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX). The archbishop stated in a letter shared by pastor Father Michael Creagan on Sept. 30 that he will begin a canonical process to clarify Conklin's status after the priest confirmed he does not intend to end his affiliation with the group.

Father Conklin, who was ordained in 2024, served as parochial vicar in Stillwater from July 2024 until March 2026 before taking a six month leave of absence to discern his vocation. Archbishop Hebda has instructed Conklin not to perform any public priestly ministry.

The SSPX leadership was declared in schism with the Catholic Church this past July after they rejected a plea from Pope Leo XIV and consecrated four bishops in Switzerland without a papal mandate. The Vatican announced that this action resulted in the immediate excommunication of the consecrating bishop, the co-consecrator, and the four new bishops.

Pope St. John Paul II wrote Theology of the Body

    The Catholic Telegraph

Pope St. John Paul II taught that the human body participates in spiritual love, according to an article by Andrew Sodergren for The Catholic Telegraph. In his apostolic exhortation Familiaris Consortio, the late pope stated that love includes the human body and that the body serves as a sharer in spiritual love.

The teaching explores how the mutual self-gift between a man and a woman in marriage acts as a sign of Christ's gift to the Church. While wedding vows establish an exclusive and permanent bond through spoken words, the theology of the body suggests these vows must be enacted through bodily acts to constitute the full reality of marriage.

Massachusetts report reveals ‘nearly 1,000 children’ abused by hundreds of priests across 3 dioceses

    Catholic News Agency

    Archdiocese of Boston

Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell released a report on September 30 stating that more than 270 Catholic clerics abused nearly 1,000 children over a century within the Dioceses of Fall River, Springfield, and Worcester.

The investigation, which began in 2019, analyzed over 300,000 pages of documents and included interviews with more than 100 people, including victims. The report claims diocesan leaders failed to respond to abuse allegations and often transferred accused priests to different parishes instead of consistently reporting the claims to law enforcement.

According to the attorney general, a culture of reverence toward priests contributed to the abuse. The report notes that around the middle of the century, priests were viewed as holy figures, and their close attachments to specific families were encouraged, which gave offending priests easy access to victims. This specific report covers all dioceses in Massachusetts except the Archdiocese of Boston.

Belmont Abbey College boosts national ranking

Belmont Abbey College rose to the number 10 spot in the Regional Colleges-South category of the U.S. News & World Report rankings. The college also ranked eighth among top private regional southern colleges and third among regional colleges in North Carolina.

According to the college, it is the highest-ranked institution in the region on the Cardinal Newman Society's annual Newman Guide, which ranks Catholic colleges. President Dr. Jeffrey W. Talley said the rankings reflect the quality of education and formation provided to students by faculty members.

The college currently has 1,693 students, marking its second largest enrollment in ten years. Officials noted that the school recently welcomed its largest class of traditional non-athlete students in eight years, attributing this growth to the college's academic programs and its approach to Catholic higher education.
